Info on S@H ver. 3.0

I found this on the net and wanted to share it: (OK, so I stole it from...)🙂😀

The past several weeks have seen several betas of the SETI@Home version 3.0 client released. Since the release of the beta 2.74 client all has been quiet, until yesterday... Eric Korpela reported on the alt.sci.seti newsgroup that they have been tweaking the result threshold for the client to help remove some unnecessary low-quality detections reported back to the Berkeley servers. While tweaking, a dozen or so bugs in the beta 2.74 client have been fixed, and they expect to release a final beta in the next couple of days. Eric also mentioned that he is trying hard to push for the full version 3.0 release by the end of the month. For a quick review, the version 3.0 SETI@Home client will feature pulse and triplet detection to go along with spike and expanded gaussian searches. The added science in the client will come at a price though. Even with a new and improved? FFT routine, the version 3.0 client is expected to have run times around 25-50% longer than the current 2.04 version

-----------

So, what do you think? Many had thought 3.0 would be faster?!?

From day one when they first released the early betas, they always said it would take longer to do a WU due to the increased science... I think that there were hopes that the optimized fft would offset that increase alot but I doubted it.

If anything, the cache dependency issue that has now been dropped will be the major factor and will allow fast PIII owners to realize better times than they are seeing now with the 2.04/2.4 clients, despite the extra science...

All I know is that the advantage I have with my dually Xeon is about to bite the dust... 🙁

Thanks for the heads up 🙂

BTW V3 is faster, but its slower too 😉 hehe ...........
Faster program but more to anaylise so it's slower overall.

I don't mind if the client is slower as long as we are all in the same boat ,I like the extra 'searching' involved 🙂 ,makes SETI better 🙂

I know you'll all think I'm weird, but the total number of WU's is not as important to me as the science being done. The new client does more work and should add more to our knowledgebase.

Once it goes final, I'll switch over to the new client.

In the end, once everyone is running the same client, the stats will equalize as well.

It could be bad news for us... I know the bulk of my output is from Sparcs (slow speed - big cache). I think Darkone and a few of the other big hitters are Sparc guys too. Also, I'm dreading upgrading the client on around 30-40 processors !!!!!!
Some of them I haven't got direc access to, I'll have to ask my friend...

The things we do for love

🙂🙂
