From what I heard (reviews on some sites posted on this forum) it isn't that great. The Majik chipset is nothing compared to the kt266. It cannot seem to clock high enough yet to have a high performance increase.

but the KA266 uses a majik chipset too, just a different version

i wonder why iwill decided to use the ali chipset in the first place. does anyone know when development began on this board (i.e., before or after the kk266a became available)?

I'd stay away from anything made by ALi. ALi has never stated that this chipset is rated for DDR333. Here's a clip from an xbitlabs article about the alleged ALi ATA 133 controller.

<< Well, it seems that ALi will never learn to make chipsets the right way. And as for the so-called "manufacturing culture" it simply doesn?t exist by ALi and is very unlikely to appear in the near future. >>

I read that problems running the board properly at a 166MHz FSB are still there. That is pretty much the only advantage this boards holds right now, it would be worthless without that feature.

The kk266a was available, i believe. But they chose the ALi because it can clock to much higher speeds, which would negate the slower performance per clock. However, it is having issues and cannot clock any better then a kk266a right now... in fact, as it is I believe i read a review of it and it looks like it gets solidly beaten by most other mobos on the market.

The Epox board beat it, I was excited about this board but with the ALI chipset I'll wait for something else.

Xbit labs are full of morons who post rumors without actually investigating anything. If they had bothered to do any research they would have found that the southbridge in question needs a bios update to support ATA133. Some manufacturers have done this on their old Magik boards like Soyo. Some haven't such as Asus. One thing you cannot claim is that ALi does not not know how to make southbridges. They consistently produce the best performing southbridges. Northbridges on the other hand...
