Info for fixing CRT monitors?

Are there any good books / texts or info on the net to figure out how to fix CRT monitors yourself? I got one older 14" CRT on the fritz and one that was working but just "died" (no picture). Any info would be helpful.

It will take more than one book to learn electronic troubleshooting and repair. I have at least 50 books, plus various cross reference guides, cataloges, ~40 years of background and I only do electronic repair as a hobby.

Having said that, Google for the Sci.Electronic.Repair FAQ. There is a special Monitor Repair FAQ section (it is fairly lengthy), however my link seems to be failing. Drexel Univ had (has) the original FAQ, but there are mirror sites. Parts of the Monitor Repair FAQ are a bit dated though still valid and relevant.

If you have a modicum of electronics knowledge, it's a good place to start. Even if you don't know the difference between a resistor and a capacitor, it might be worth perusing just to understand a little about troubleshooting and repair techniques.

Good luck!

You want to restore a 14" CRT?! Not worth the trouble in this day and age, this is the disposable generation: if anything doesn't work quite right chuck it out and slap in a new one.

Check for places online to pick up a new monitor, alternatively you can try going to banks or large businesses and asking if they have any spare old ones they no longer want. I know where I work we've got about 6 17"CRT monitors in perfect working order that are just waiting to be disposed of simply because we've upgraded to LCD's recently.

14" is also way too small. I'm ot even sure you can buy CRT's that small any longer! you should aim for a *minimum* of 17". I think a decent montior is worth every penny. No point having a great computer if 99.99% of it's output is displayed on a nasty gold-fish bowl monitor that'll give you eye strain.

well there's my 2c...

The amount of time and money spent on books and repairing teh 14" CRT would be far greater than the cost of a nice brand spankin' new CRT or even LCD for that matter.
