Inflation has outpaced the rise in salaries for the first time in 14 years.

For the first time in 14 years, the American workforce has in effect gotten an across-the-board pay cut.

The growth in wages in 2004 and the first two months of this year trailed inflation, compounding the squeeze from higher housing, energy and other costs.

The result is that people like Victor Romero are finding themselves falling behind.

The 49-year-old film-set laborer had to ditch his $1,100-a-month Hollywood apartment because his rent kept rising while his pay of $24.50 an hour stayed flat.

"There's no such thing as raises anymore," Romero said.

This is the first time that salaries have increased more slowly than prices since the 1990-91 recession. Though salary growth has been relatively sluggish since the 2001 downturn, inflation also had stayed relatively subdued until last year, when the consumer price index rose 2.7%. But wages rose only 2.5%.

Full article can be found here.

I personally have been seeing this with my own salary. It has been slowly building up and getting worse each year since 2001. My yearly raises now do not match the increasing cost of healthcare alone. Every year I get a raise, yet now the increasing cost of healthcare nulls my raise to where I am either making the same as the year before or slightly less when it's all said and done. Then you factor the increasing cost of gas prices, which increases the cost of everything.

The current administrations economic polices are NOT working!

Also in today?s news, the US trade deficit. It's at a new record high... again.... :disgust:

The economy is good.

Things are getting better.

There are people buying multimillion dollar homes.

If you think it's tough here, look at starving Ethopians.

Gas prices are irrelevant, quit whining.

You are unpatriotic to post such drivel

You must be a Liberal. Stop whining and come back to the Nirvana which is Bush.

There is a war on. You were told you would need to sacrifice. Suck it up.

Be glad you have the opportunity to buy health insurance at all. Don't bitch about poor coverage and hidden costs or that maybe you can't afford to buy in. That's no my problem.

That about covers it for now.

Kinda hard to pull out once you've started, eh? The Propagandist should have practiced what he preaches: abstinence.

Is this a gloom and doom post?

The Economy is not that bad. It is questionable whether the policies of the Clinton Era or even of some other different president would have been any improvement over the present economic situation. Bush did not force the Internet Stock Bubbble to collapse. The Economy was held up with false presumptions and was doomed due to unsound economic practices by the stock market. When a Global economy of oil causes prices to rise or supply to be less it is not just the USA that affects these things. As the demand for Oil rises in China, and the Old USSR Countries the price of Oil will be forced to go up if the supply of oil does not increase.

Welcome to Economics 101.

In Europe things are worse and they endorse higher taxes and socialism. In fact Europe may be a force that is pulling the rest of the world under.

Europeans define their standard of living by a different set of values. When I lived in Germany, a one family home was substantially smaller and more humble then what you will find in the United States. Similarly, many Europeans utilize public transportation and make use of one family car, as the cost of operating a motor vehicle in Europe is substantially higher then it is here. Europeans are also far less vulnerable to the trappings of commercialism and credit card debt.

European households enjoy a higher standard of living because they are more fiscally responsible.

First time in 14 years? Hell, that's a damn long run to go on.
Exactly. The economy goes through a cyclical pattern, and our economy is currently adjusting to the effects of globalization. Economic isolation will only further depreciate the value of our currency, as has our policy of selling off our debt as a quick answer to balancing the budget.

At the rate we are going, the government will either have to raise taxes or cut back on its spending, more likely a combination of both.

Unfortunately, the special interests from both sides of the political spectrum have such a strangehold on our government, that neither is a viable option for politicians who are more concerned about their political career then the people they supposedly serve.

Everlived in a San Francisco apartment?
I think it has more to do with the age of the city and the geographical layout.
Old cities have smaller apartments and are closer together becasue of transportation limitations back in the day. NYC apartments can be tiny also.

No, but I lived in a closet in Boston for two years, so I understand where you are coming from.

If you look at real estate trends in the home construction boom of the 1950s, the standard model was a modest one level home. After WW2, the generation that survived the Depression suddenly found themselves in an America that was now a dominant global power and economically prosperous. This led to the evolution of suburbia and the middle class.

The homes built to accomodate this surge from city squalor to suburban comfort commanded homes that were reasonable in price and size to the needs of a family.

People today are now knocking down the homes built in this period to have their 5 bedroom monstrosities, just like the ones they see on all these home redesign shows.

"suburbia -ha little did they know they would be ghettos of the future." -a line from one of my favorite movies.
The boom of people in the 50's was pretty crazy and our cities could not have handled it without completley destroying our history.
Shame they built such ugly places with no soul or character without a care for what would happen if the car's day was finished.
Oh well mother nature will reclaim the suburbs sooner or later.
