Anyone know about the Thermalright HR-01-775? I've seen 1 review and it looks promising. I'm looking to achieve the best noise/cooling combination. Any other fan recomendations for the 120?

I'm a bit confused.. why the Ultra 120? I'm having a hard time seeing what's so great about it.. maybe there just aren't enough reviews?
I guess it could be that the reviews are conflicting, too. Here the Scythe Infinity barely beats the Ultra120 (http://pro-clockers.com/reviews.php?id=164&page=6) but here the Ultra120 wins by a good margin (http://www.bigbruin.com/2006/scytheinfinity_5)
I just can't seem to find a compelling reason to choose it over any other cooler out there. Anyone care to clear things up?

Thanks for all the advice!

One thing I forgot to mention, you need to do some minor mod on the Yate Loon fan before you can use it on the Ultra-120. For some strange reason, the Yate Loon fan has "pillars" on all four corner, which prevents you from using the Ultra-120's wire fan clip right outta the box. You need to cut away the "pillars" first. I used my dremel. Here's a pic.

Thanks Baked! I don't have a dremel, but i'm sure i can figure out a way to saw the pillars off. I'll use that pic as a reference when the heatsink and fan arrive in the mail.

Someone said in a thread a while back they used wire cutters and clipped them off. I've never actually tried this so I can't confirm.

Pick your fan...that's the difference. Different reviewers use different fans and thus get different results.

Basically the fins being placed closer together give a better heat dissipation area for the fan to blow air through.

Werd!

I might also add... a couple of BIG heatpipes are better than LOTS of small ones, but 'we' haven't gotten there yet, soooo... ;)

I now have both Ultra-120 and Scythe Infinity. With many trials, I concluded that Infinity is somewhat better when it comes to pure cooling, when used with a high RPM (1800~2500RPM, preferably 38mm) fan. The test was performed on an open-air testbed where motherboard sits flat. I'd still go with the Ultra-120 due to its profile (lighter/smaller) and secure mounting mechanism, however. The Ultra-120's biggest issue is the mating surface can be not as flat as it looks to be. I also have a Tuniq 120 but can't compare it with the other two in a proper manner since it's in my main rig.

Lopri, since you have all 3, consider running the first and only real test with the top 3 coolers available today!

Alrighty, then....

So, you're saying you have an Ultra-120, an Infinity, and a Tower 120... You're using the Ultra-120 -- while the Infinity and Tower 120 are sitting in the closet, or whatever?!?!?!

I just want to get this straight... ;)

In which order did you buy these things?

Since the Tuniq Tower 120 hasn't been generally available since May, I assume that was the first cooler you bought. Did the Infinity or the Ultra-120 come next?

From the sound of it, you're bench-building a second machine and couldn't get a Tuniq Tower 120, so you settled for second-best, but couldn't make up your mind. That's what I don't understand. Is the second machine a lesser computer than your main rig?

And, if you know the Tower 120 works best, why would you suggest ppl buy an Ultra-120.

What am I missing here?

I wouldn't suggest for/against any of the 3 since they're all excellent coolers. The reason I can't compare Tuniq 120 with the other two is because it's in my main rig. (see sig) It is sealed tight :D and I wouldn't mess with the setup in that it'd require motherboard removal. I purchased Ultra-120 before Scythe Infinity, and didn't know about the latter at the time of purchase. If tomorrow is the judgement day and I had to make a decision today, it'd be like:

1. Tuniq 120
2. Ultra-120 for LGA775
3. Scythe Infinity for AM2 or Socket 939

Oh, okay... that makes sense!

Owning NONE of those myself -- based solely on what I've read here and elsewhere -- that seems to be the current pecking order. ;)

Thanks!

Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 for <$25 shipped. You're simply wasting money by buying a $60 HSF.

Out of curiosity, let's say an Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 and a Tuniq Tower 120 were the same price. Which would you buy?
