Infinity: Battlescape (epic space sim)

clamum

Has anyone heard of Infinity: Battlescape? I just did last night. Per the developers, it's "an epic space sim where 100's of players wage war across a seamless, procedurally generated, true to scale solar system!"

I'm not very familiar with Star Citizen, and have played Elite: Dangerous just a few hours, but Infinity: Battlescape sounds at least somewhat similar to these games.

Check out the Kickstarter page, linked above, for more information and gameplay videos. I'm considering funding their campaign for $60, but I'm not sure that would get me into the game and playing right away (April 2017, if I understand correctly, for that level of funding).

I've been keeping tabs on this since Chris Roberts recommended throwing some eyeballs at it.

Procedural generation is creating some lovely varied terrain. I think the planetside combat looks like a blast. Overall a great looking combat / flight game.

Only thing that worries me is gameplay at this point is purely combat related, but if they reach their highest funding goals, there is going to be a base-building component that might end up being really cool.

And I hope they offer something besides target-lead-indicators for aiming. I freaking hate those compared to lag pips. I would rather aim at a ship instead of a point in space....but ah well.

Yeah it does seem pretty combat-heavy. I'm not sure how I feel about that; it wouldn't be my typical playstyle in something like this. But even at this point I think the game is pretty impressive. Still debating on whether to fund this or not.

Uh oh, you've gone and invoked the troll incantations. I'm sure this thread will be derailed in no time be certain individuals.

Anyway, flight mechanics seem nice and smooth. I always worry about procedurally generated "worlds" though. They always tend to not have very much variety to them for some reason. Some of the videos seem to confirm that.

Other than that, looks like a pretty decent space fighter but would probably get stale fast.

I think it is hard to say how long it would hold my attention. I think it all depends on how they can turn things into being fun to do. That has been my typical problem with procedural generated game content. As long as they have enough variation in the algorithm to truly make some unique things, areas tend to look a lot like more of the same after awhile.

I mean, I have played plenty of procedural games, several of them with me spending hundreds of hours with (Dwarf Fortress comes to mind). But there needs to be some level of depth somewhere involved to keep my attention after a couple hours.

This is where I fall re: procedural environments. I think it's great for creating a base environment to build on, but at some point, I think you need real artists to come in and create zones / assets of interest. Relying totally on pe gives you little incentive to explore once you've seen all the variations of the algorithm.

I saw it... I got the same vibe I did off SC and E😀 Kickstarters.

I gave it a Sathanas/Colossus-wide berth.
