Infiniti G35 with accident history

I test drove a privately owned '05 G35 with only 29k miles today. The owner is asking $15,000 and when I test drove it everything seemed fine. It has the premium package everything and navigation and its fair market value is well above what I can negotiate for. The only issue is that the Carfax report shows the following:
Accident reported
in Norfolk
Involving front impact
It hit another motor vehicle
Airbags did not deploy

The car is also the color I want with the 6MT which is extremely rare in this area. The owner also showed and ensured me that the front frame of the car was completely intact so there was no major damage.

What should I do?

That's pretty darn cheap. You should ask if the radiator core support was replaced or ask to see the repair estimate from the accident.

if he was the owner of the car ask to see if he has the paperwork on the accident. This could just be a simple fender bender or it should a whole head-on collision. Just look at the receipts of what was replaced at body shop. If it was just a bumper and bumper support it should be all good. you get hood and fenders then you know it was more of a serious thing.

sedan or coupe?

I got my loaded g35x sedan with prem and navi for 15k with about 32k miles.

if he doesn't have the paperwork take it to a body shop and ask them what was replaced. most can tell instantly by looking. I would make sure everything is aligned. try to see if OEM parts are still on the car. open to hood to see if the vin stickers are on the fenders. if you can post pictures.

I would use that carfax report as a strong leverage for the owner to lower the price to BELOW trade-in value. You know right off the bat this should be BELOW private party.

Since the air bags did not go off, we can presume the accident was very minor. The carfax report should be able to tell who entered it or you can ask the owner what shop did the repairs or look at the repair order from the body shop. That will tell you what they changed, but it sounds like it was a very minor hit.

I might not worry too much. My Maxima rear-ended somebody (ok, the driver was at fault) and caused I think about $4500 in damage, got new headlights, I think a new hood, new radiator, new air conditioning compressor, a bunch of new stuff, but the airbags never went off.

The only problem I've noticed is the hood doesn't align at one corner if I look closely. The paint matched closely, though (I can't tell a diff). Also a few years later the windshield washer reservoir has a very slight leak. It could be unrelated to this. Basically as I see it I got some free new parts. Do ask the owner for the repair invoice, though. Mine listed out absolutely everything that was replaced.

Just because the airbags didn't go off, doesn't mean that it was a minor accident. Two examples are my co-workers Altima and my girlfriends Altima. The co-workers had about $9k in repairs with most of the driver's side suspension being replaced as well as the fender and hood. The girlfriends was about $6k in repairs and hit in the pretty much the same area. I can tell that it was repaired and a lot of the gaps do not line up correctly.

On the other hand, my car was slightly rubbed against by another car and it still cost over $2k to repaint the bumper and replace the chrome accent. A kid could do more damage with their bicycle, but I'm sure it will still show up on a Carfax report.

I'll try to talk him down...the vehicle was also serviced 2-3 weeks later so I guess I should call them and see if they know anything?

I'd keep my search out out a little longer to see if a clean one comes up. I know the 6 speed makes it much harder to find one though. But if I was buying a car I really don't want a questionable history coming with it.

Yes, because new gen came out with bunch more features (+ looks, which most people like more), last gen is getting cheaper quite quick.

Yep. It's difficult to get a 2008 G37 under 30k right now. I've been trying. The ones that I've found have either high mileage or are missing Nav which I want. I know I'm looking for a deal but it'll find its way to me if I keep looking.

Asside from a little bump in HP, were there really any significant changes to the 09 G37 sedans over the '08 G35s?

Different motor, the G37 = 3.7L VQ new design, G35 = 3.5L VQ, about an 8-year-old design.

Some tidbits from a MT article about the G37 (coupe, but the motor stuff applies all the way around)

"As its name suggests, the G37 is motivated by a new 3.7-liter VQ-series V-6 that delivers 330 horses and 270 pound-feet of torque. Compared with the 306-horse, 3.5-liter, 268-pound-foot V-6 in the second-gen G sedan, the 3.7 utilizes the same 95.5mm bore but features a longer 86.0mm stroke (versus 81.4 mm), a higher-compression ratio (11.0:1 versus 10.6:1), and roughly 35-percent unique parts. The "VHR" components denote Infiniti's innovative Variable Valve Event and Lift technology and the 3.7's "high-revolution" capability, i.e., a redline of 7500 rpm. According to Infiniti, VVEL, which continuously varies the timing and lift of the intake valves, provides more power and torque throughout the powerband as well as improved fuel economy and reduced emissions."

So, new variable valve timing, etc. Also this is becoming a standard Nissan motor for loads of models, so future support, parts, etc, will be more convenient for the 3.7L in all probability. Performance-mod wise, the 3.5 has been around for a while, lots of stuff available, but with the 370Z pretty hot and competitive, look for the future to be bright for this one.

If price is close, G37 is the hands-down choice, but there are some stellar deals on the G35 models right now.

+ 7-speed AT. (That is, if you want AT) Also, expect small glitches of 1st year G35 being fixed.

how are high millage G35 sedans?

i dont know what is considered high mileage now but there are some g35 sedans on g35driver.com that are in the 100k+ already. given the first g35 came out in 2003. the model was rolling around since 02. 7 years old for the very first one made. average miles is 15k/ year. so those would be in the 105k range now.

A lot of them have held up very nicely. gas milege is still poor for the most part on these cars. but no one has stated too many engine failures. Only motor to worry about was the
"rev-up" motors found in 6mt in 2005-2006. they had oil burning issues.
