I never heard of this game until someone mentioned it during the Circuit City liquidation, but I still passed. Then Best Buy had that $10 sale, so I said might as well, it won't hurt if it sucks. Played it this past Saturday and finished the first disc, said I "only" did 12 hours on normal difficulty, so it must only be counting when I'm controlling the characters. I'm about 1/3 (I think) through the 2nd disc. So no spoilers please if you reply.

I just finished Fable 2 after procrastinating on finishing the last 5 hours after 2 months. So when I started IU, it seemed sooooo bland and linear. And before Fable, it was Fallout 3 (I need to eventually start again, never went beyond 9 hours on it), so I'm a little spoiled with the character trait and creation, and the open sandbox.

My goodness, I'm sure someone could finish this game in 10 hours if they removed all the cutscenes! And the worse part is you can't skip the cutscene if you died and didn't make it to the next save point, so you're forced to watch it again...and again...and again.

I found myself wandering around brainlessly trying to figure out what I'm suppose to do next or what the current quest is if I just missed what they said in the cutscenes. About 6 hours into the game, I "found" the Talk action in the menu, then found out if I keep talking to my party member while I'm in the menu selection, they'll tell me what I'm suppose to do next. Doh!!!!

But aside from those negative points, the game is visually impressive. Extremely visually impressive! I'm amazed on how much detail is put into everything in both in game, as well as all the cutscenes. Like all the little details, such as the rings spinning around the moon anytime you look up at it, the carpets designs, the buildings at Kolton...etc. It's all just WOW.

The game has it's great points like the action fighting, magic use, item creation and so forth. I'm enjoying this game more than I thought I would. It seems more like the game was designed to be a movie first, and then you get to do some RPG action inbetween, instead of the other way around. I don't mind it too much as I'm an anime fan so I'm enjoying the story also. I'm surprised they didn't just put all the cutscenes together, box it up and make a movie out of it, and release it.

Seemed like Microsoft just wanted another JRPG under it's belt to attract more RPG gamers to the 360. Did this game sell relatively well? I'm not expecting FF numbers, but hearing very little about this game, and seeing the amount of development, money must've came from some where (MS?) if it wasn't a big seller.

The English voice acting is annoying. Is there anyway to switch to Japanese voice?

Agreed. Besides, what about the legions of square fans out there who eat just about anything square publishes out ? (I'm on the PS2 side of that equation.. :) )

I want to try this I really do... but you scared me off when you hinted that the cut scenes are long. I tried to start Lost Odyssey the other night but after about 30 minutes of cut scenes/walking and still no save point I just turned it off and said to hell with it.

With that being said, I don't mind cut scenes as long as I can save pretty much any time I want. Is this possible with Infinite Undiscovery?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I picked this up as well from the Best Buy sale and was thinking of giving it a try soon.

For $10, it's a reasonable purchase. For $60, not a chance. The game is flawed in a fair few ways, despite being pretty and sounding nice.

What are some RPG's worth picking up on the 360? Fable II and Tales of Vesperia? For comparison, I liked the SNES Final Fantasy games and Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2.

If you like JRPG's then Fable II may or may not be to your liking. It's an action RPG, more like Oblivion than a traditional RPG. Tales of Vesperia is a little more traditional but it has real time fighting (which I kind of like). I've not played either, I played Tales of Symphonia which was a bunch of fun, Vesperia is very similar.

I played it for about a half hour, then turned it off and sent it back to GameFly. Not a fan. What I really want is just some old school Final Fantasy 7 style gameplay/storytelling.

I played it this past weekend and also got to the 2nd disc.

My best advice is to craft. Craft, craft and craft some more. You can pretty much have unlimited money and badass end game weapons right from the get go as there is no level requirement for gear.

Good game, can't wait to finish it and begin the next difficulty.

Oh great.. another game I need to get!!! I just started Disk 3 of Lost Odyssey and I cant get enough of it. It's really starting to remind me of FF7.. the music and the enviroments seem all to familiar sometimes. and the story to me is very very good. I love reading the dreams, its a nice break from constant action and opens up the characters stories more than CGI ever could.

I got Mass Effect next on my list, then I need to play Eternal Sonata for PS3, then MAYBE Blue Dragon, and now this.. UGH. :)

sure it was a relatively big production, and based on what chronodekar stated of being a fan (groupie LOL), of course it's on your radar. But to the average gamer, I really don't think many people knew about this game. I've asked many of my friends who consider themselves serious gamers, and they didn't know about this, but they heard of Eternal Sonata. I don't recall seeing this in mags or ads, so to me, it seemed like a lowpro game compared to other RPGs.

What is the point of playing a rpg if u are going to skip the story?

I think rage187 meant to skip it if you've seen it before. Personally for me, I died 2 times trying to kill a boss, before I realized I'm suppose to injure him, then run to chop at the chain and repeat. So I had to see the same damn long cutscenes 3 times.

Just finished the game this past Sunday afternoon. I think thats the fastest I have ever finished a RPG. I don't think I can do it that fast again, since these past weekends, I did 12+ hours of gaming a day, which I'm normally not able to due to responsibilities. Not sure if that's an achievement or sad anti-social behavior. LOL!

I did maybe 5 item creations to just see what they did through the entire game until I had to go to the underwater castle where Leonid is. I didn't know there was a teleporter to the side of the gazeebo (?) where Aya and Capell wake up. Genma is there too. I kept dying because my armor and weapons were weak, and I needed more potions. I thought "this sucks, I'm not ready to go to the castle yet", then I finally found Genma and the teleporter to go back to Kolton. That's when I started the Item Creation grind. 4 hours of IC grinding to get the best weapons and armor I could try to get. Some poster above said to IC as early and often as possible. He wasn't kidding. I'm just glad the game doesn't really force you to do it if you don't want to, but it helps.

The voice acting of Leonid is so horrible in the last stages. Sounds like a sausage loving crack head fiening for his next hit of sausage.

Without giving anything away, the last chain and after:
WOW!!! Amazing visuals. Extremely amazing designs and details. Just a little too bad that the 360 couldn't display it all.

And one last thing for that - Lipstick??!! What?? Are you serious? LOL. Don't give it away if you've seen "it" already.

Wasn't going to start Lost Odyssee until later, as I'm more of a FPS gamer, but Lost Odyssee seems pretty cool so far. Hate that they force you to grind to level up more than other RPGs. Opening sequence is jaw dropping. 4 disc game!!!! uggh...there goes my life.

I'm at the end and just finishing up making the best gear I can before running through the underwater temple/lunar. After I beat the game I'll run through Serpahic Gate as that sounds like a lot of fun. I like the fact I get to keep my gear and levels.

Remember, craft, craft and craft some more. Don't forget a couple hundred achievement points are tied to crafting and it is super easy to level up. Plus you make badass gear and money in the process.

What, when or where is Serpahic Gate?

Looks like it didnt sell that well, .45m worldwide, although depending on the budget it might have done OK. I'm basing that on 1 mi = sold well, which is obviously subjective. It probably would have sold better in Japan if it was also on the PS3, but for whatever reason these JRPGs dont sell well on either HD console this generation. The American RPGs do alright in the US. FF is probably the exception, and maybe it always was.

Looking at the numbers in general for RPGs, this seems like it is a PS2 and handheld genre. Looks like it went from the PS2 to handhelds. Considering how prevalent the PS2 was and handhelds are, current gen systems maybe don't have the numbers for the genre to have high sales numbers. The Wii on the other hand, has fewer RPG sales than the PS3, yet it has the highest install base. If SE rereleases a lightwieght version for say the DSi, I'm sure it'll sell in the millions. Could also just be that the genre is in decline. I have friends who say they'll pick up a PS3 when FF is released, but its not clear why they dont already have a console to play the JRPGs that are out now. Of course we are older now, and the perception that you need a new tv and console is outweighed by more practical responsibilities.

What, when or where is Serpahic Gate?

The Seraphic Gate is a special area available for people who have already
cleared the game on 'Normal' mode or higher. When you have done so, you'll be
allowed to create a 'Clear Data' file. Load that file and you will appear on
the ledge overlooking the Underwater Palace. There's a portal here that leads
back to Kolton. Once there, save at the inn, then head to the palace. Step
through the front gate, then pass through the next gate beyond and take an
immediate right. Down that hallway, you'll find a portal leading into the
gate. You'll be greeted by the following message as you enter:

Welcome to the Seraphic Gate!

The creatures lurking within these halls are the foulest and
fiercest you have ever known. Balls of steel are required.
...But titanium is recommended.

To help match the power of your foes, item creation and
enchantment has been enhanced. There is also powerful
equipment awaiting you on each floor. Take advantage of
it, and good luck reaching the bottom.

You can return to the world above via the teleporter at
the entrance.

The message basically describes the experience you are about to have. Note
that you have retained all items and party member levels that you had when you
cleared the game, so you'll be able to keep the adventure going now even that
credits have rolled.

This area of the game is completely optional and mostly serves as a reward for
players who want something else to do after they've conquered the regular
game.

As an aside, some achievements for crafting can only be done with components from the SG.

Finished the SG tonight. Holy crap, Infinite undiscovery was the best $10 ever!

Final party I used was:

Capell lvl 191
Sigmund lvl 183
Komanchi lvl 189
Aya lvl 190

All had 99999 HP and 9999 MP. The 2 girls wore 2 roses each that generated 6% HP and 2% MP every 3 seconds. Capell and Sigmund used rings of lifes and hearts and generated about the same. So every 3 seconds each member generated 5600 HP and 100 MP. That made it so I never had to use a potion again until the last fight.

The last fight took 10 minutes and required mass healing spam. Each party member had their final end game weapon. Capell alone hit for 50,000 with GV and 75,000 with Reginleif. They were fucking monsters. But the final boss would damn near 1 shot 2 characters at once. Scary, but she fell.

/flex

No way am I playing it on Hard and doing all 68 hours again. The SG alone could have been a game in itself.

oh shtt! thanks for the followup to that. that's insane sounding.

Sigmund? I guess he comes back to life...wait, don't tell me yet, let me find out on my own :)

After I finished it on normal without going through the SG, I started Lost Odyssee, I'm on my 3rd out of 4 disc. Extremely linear and at times boring.

Seems like I have one half more game of IU to play! I wonder how many others played the game and thought that was it and the game is beat and didn't know about the SG?

Yeah, seriously great value for $10!
