INFINEON memory in 9800 non-pro built by ATI.
Is this stuff junk or what? I just purchased a 9800np wanting to flash the bios to pro levels, but it looks as if I will not be so lucky. Can I over clock this thing? with Rad clocker? and how much? I don't want to burn it up. Do all Built by ATI 9800np's have infineon ram? Should I return this thing and exchange for another, or keep it? Or will 9800 vs. 9800p see any difference in dx9 games like HL2?

Ugh. Try to structure your questions a bit clearer (ie, a list) or something - it's tough to wade through that chunk of text. Anyways, here's some pointers:

The Infeneon RAM is fine. It won't run at Pro speeds (certainly not for the long term) but the performance difference between the 9800 Pro and non-pro is not that much. You can still overclock the core like nuts, though (probably in the 380-410 Mhz range).

Not all BBA 9800 pro's have Infineon 3.0ns RAM, some have 3.3ns Samsung or 2.8ns Samsung (the good stuff). All that means is that yours won't overclock as well for the memory, and you probably can't flash to a 9800 pro BIOS.

In DX9 games, again, the difference will be pretty marginal, especially if you overclock your core a lot. If you can exchange the card for free or almost nothing then I guess you can try it (chances are they're going to have the same memory though). Otherwise it's not the end of the world.

The Gigacube R9800np is the only card I've read about that has infineon 3.0ns and clocks to pro speeds. At least, that's what he claims in his article. Look on the 2nd page, very bottom paragraph.

Beleive you me, I would like to know how he did it. Maybe a Gigacube BIOS flash to our BBA 9800np 3.0ns Infineon would work?

Have you overclocked it at all? Do you plan to try?

For those of you who are keeping track:

ATI 9800NP (Infineon 3.0ns) running @ 375 core/306 mem nice and stable so far. I think I'm pretty much close to the sweet spot here, I can increase the memory but I have to decrease the core or I'll get artifacts. This cards was from the local Best Buy a few days ago, seems the majority of the latest ones have Infineon chips, sigh. Oh well, not too bad - a not too shabby jump from the stock 325/290?

i had a bunch of ATI 9800s for a while that i sold. friend of mine bought a few and tested them. they had 2.8 samsung and one actually did 430/710.

so yeah... if you get samsung 2.8 its good stuff. i've heard a few early cards actually has samsung 2.2 (same stuff the fx5900 ultra uses for a 850mhz mem clock)
