I want to buy a GPS receiver. I've seen them for as low as $99 on the web, new in the box. Low-end Garmin, I believe.

I don't know much about GPSs'; I know what they do, and how they do it...but not much as far as features and things like that. Something in the up-to-$200 range sounds right.

I will be using it to set waypoints as I wheel thru the woods. I.E. I can find my way back to the head of the trail...usually a good thing!

Can anyone make any suggestions on a good unit to purchase? Personal experience is always a great thing. Thanks. :)

you know, GPSNOW.com has the Garmin V delux for only $418 shipped. That is an awesome price, considering that pricegrabber.com's lowest price for the NON-deluse is over $430.

Not inexpensive but I bought this.

I got lost twice this past weekend and it cost me over 2 hours in time driving around.

No more getting lost for me.

The E-Trex will allow you to set waypoints, but is still a very basic unit.

Garmin is considered by most to be more 'user-friendly' than Magellan and other brands.

I would take a few minutes and look at BoatUS and Garmin to learn a little more about WAAS enabling, downloadable maps, color displays, screen size and such.

If you decide that all you need/want is a basic handheld, then the Garmin E-Trex is probably as good a choice as any.

I've got a Handspring Visor Deluxe with a Magellan GPS Companion and it suits me well enough. The Visor cost me $60 from FS/FT forum and the GPS Companion cost me $50 after a $50 rebate, a total of $110.

I can update the maps with different software if I want, set waypoints, heck I just got it a couple weeks ago and don't even know what it can all do yet

Edit: Oh, I think I can use the Visor as a PDA as well ;)

Thanks, Cyberian and Yzzim; that's the kind of additional opinions I was looking for. Research, research...I hate researching stuff. ;)

i have this one and love it. I had a problem when a speedometer wasn't working, and the gps was accurate within about a second (depending on my distance of accuracy which was usually 60-85ft). I also used it as a odometer and for tracking points when driving.
