Inexpensive speakers, 2.0 or 2.1?

My current speakers - Logitech x240 are dying. I think they were 5w each speaker plus 20w sub. I need to replace them, and I'm not really interested in sound quality, more focused on price. I don't do any PC gaming really and only use speakers to listen to music and while surfing the internet. I move a lot and I'm wondering if I could get by with a 2.0 setup so I wouldn't have to haul around a subwoofer all the time? Any thoughts on $50 or less 2.0 setups vs 2.1?

According to your specs, I would just bop down to my nearest Walmart and pick up a pair of Logitech S120s.

I bought my mom a set of Arctic Sound S111 2.0 speakers ($19 shipped from Amazon 10/06/13). They take up hardly any space and sound pretty good for sub-$20 speakers.

Wouldn't a 20USD headset be better for you? It's more portable, doesn't bother people around you (if that's an issue) and it will be much better for sound quality (since you listen to music, gaming doesn't really need sound quality that much).

I recommend a set of Pioneer SE-MJ502-K. Great great bang for buck.

Picked up a pair of these off eBay, thanks for the suggestion.

Wow, of all the times I've ever written on sites like bikeforums.net etc., I think this is one of the first times someone said they considered my comment. Hahah.

How do you find the Creative T12 speakers?
