Inexpensive modem recommendation?

I was asked by a friend to recomend an inexpensive modem. I have had an older USR/3Com 56k for a couple of years and haven't really looked at modem prices since. It was $109.00 when new. What's good out there now? I don't think he wants to spend too much on it. Maybe less than $30.00. I have heard of winmodems but I would have trouble recommending them because i heard they use system resources. PLease advice.
Thanks.

I will check for lucent. Can you give me a name brand that has lucent chipsets if it isn't too much of a problem?
thanks

Fry's usually has really cheap sales on some OEM USR stuff.. i picked up a 56k USR for about $15-20 last time i was there..

Chinese you need to get a life...not everyone has access to these broadband alternatives.

I wouldn't use a winmodem if it was given to me !!

I use the 3com Model 2977 great modem at a good price

I would recommend to you a Viking 56K ISA winmodem, they can be had for 10 to 15 bucks. A search on C.Net will garner you the scoop on this modem I have several and they all work good. they have the lucient chip set.

Viking 56K ISA sounds good but I don't think the mobo has an ISA slot, I'll check though. Does this modem come in PCI?
The Diamond sounds OK too but it doesn't say it has the lucent chip. WOuld this still be OK or not?
Anything else?

Do you have a model # for the Diamond SupraExpress 56k. I found two. One is SupraSST 56i softmodem with a Conexant chipset and the other is THE SUPRAMAX 56K FAXMODEM. The second one says it takes advantage of you rpc's processing power tp deliver fast internet connections...
So doesn't that mean these are both Winmodems?
I can't find the SupraExpress as of yet.

Try a Diamond SupraMax modem. They are cheap and have worked great for me. Everyone I know with one has never had a problem with them.

Anytime you see Rockwell/Conexiant, run the other way, fast. I don't like winmodems in general but these really suck ass. More people have trouble with their compaq, HP and e-Machines connecting and they all use these chips.

Do a serach for the user ID "Modus"

look at any thread about modems that he has posted in, and he'll explain nicely why to get a Lucent LT.

Winmodems used to suck, its a thing of the past. Some people just can't let go of their hardware modems and admit that a Lucent LT is just as good for 1/5th of the price. And with today's fast processors the amount of CPU time a modem takes up is not noticeable.

Get a Lucent LT. I don't know of any particular brand that uses Lucent though...can anyone help the guy out here?

I'd recommend you look around in one of your local newsgroups to see if anyone has a used one for sale. Lots of people are switching to broadband and are unloading perfectly good modems at low prices.

I would go with Diamond supra express or 3 com hardware modems if your going to play games.

Anything else a lucent winmodem will do.

what companies make kucent lt based modems, im looking into buying one for my parents computer at home but i dont know what brands to search for. also what kind of quake3 pings will i get on this? would my pings be better with another dial-up? Dail up is the only conntction available in my parents area. here at shcool i have dsl.

JDR has a $30 v.90 PCI modem (#PCI-56KD-1) that uses a hardware signal processor and may be completely hardware based (contains a line transformer), but to be sure, ask if it works without Windows.
