I'm starting to notice the not-so-great quality of my built-in audio. I'd love to have the money to purchase a ZS Platinum (or better) audio card, but I've got a few other purchases that have a grip on my wallet right now (namely my wife's new car ;)).

I'm looking for suggestions for an inexpensive (~$40) audio card. I primarily listen to rock/alternative (lots of guitar based music) and I also play a game or two. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I like my Philips Acoustic Edge a lot. I think it is an underrated card. The sound quality in both games and music, although a little digital sounding, is very clear and distinct. The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz looks like an excellent card too. I have never heard it in action, but the user response has been overwhelming since it's conception.

I had a Santa Cruz before I decided to go SFF. it was an excellent card, and was one of the most missed parts of my machine

For that budget, there's really no competition.
