Inexpensive 17" monitor recommendations?

Hi,

I'm a student with a fairly limited budget. My ProView 15" monitor is stumbling on its last legs and I need a new monitor. I'd like to move up to an inexpensive 17", less than $250 if possible. I'd prefer to purchase one locally, perhaps from one of the usual chain stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Depot).

I bought a Viewsonic A70, which ran for $240 and currently has a $40 mail-in rebate. I've used Viewsonic monitors at work and am generally pleased with them. The store didn't have an A70 on display, but since the E771 received positive reviews and this model seemed to be quite similar to it (based on specs), I decided to try one out. I like the low-glare screen and the colors look reasonably bright, but the text is annoyingly fuzzy. It's much fuzzier than the text on my old $150 15" monitor, in fact. I could probably live with it, but I am having a hard time justifying spending a couple of hundred bucks on a monitor that I am not happy with. The resolution is set at 1024 x 768, the refresh rate is automatically set at 85 hz, and I am using a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro PCI video card (S3 Virge chipset) which is nothing special, but I only use it for business and internet apps... I'm not a gamer.

Local stores here also carry the KDS AV-7TF (FD Trinitron), Viewsonic A75F (which I believe is very similar to the EF70, uses the Diamondtron NF tube), NEC MultiSync 75 (shadow mask), NEC FE700 (FD Trinitron), Samsung 753DF (flat screen shadow mask), etc. I have not seen all of these monitors in person yet. Unfortunately many of these chain stores hook up only one video signal via a splitter to a bank of 10 or 12 monitors, so it's very difficult to judge image quality in the store since it is already significantly deteriorated thanks to the splitter.

I have about ten days to return the Viewsonic A70 I bought. If any of you could make any recommendations, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Aamir

I'm not sure what the going price is now, but I bought my ADI Microscan 5P+ monitor almost a year ago for $220 US and have been VERY pleased with it, and in comparing it to my friend's Trinitron monitor which cost almost twice as much, I can see almost no difference and the text is VERY sharp, which is one of the main reasons I picked the ADI..

I saw one up at Best Buy.. I can't remember the brand.. $149 with a $50 rebate. If that rebate's still good, I'm going to be getting it on Wednesday.

I was impressed with the 17" KDS vs-7i for it's price and performace ($175 shipped). The 17" vs-8i is a little better and a little more $$. I went with a 19" KDS vs-19sn for a reasonable $298.

A friend just bought the 19" Samsung 955sl with a $30 rebate = $270 and it is very nice also. My KDS has slightly better specs but I wouldn't be dissapointed with it.

I bought a 17" KDS Trinitron for the wife from SAM's club the other day that looks decent for colors and graphics but it doesn't hold a candle to an Eizo/Nanao shadow mask monitor for clear text and tight focusing in the corners. Of course it was about 1/4 the price.

!They have the NEC FE700! That is a legend!
Really, I don't know what you're waiting for, go for a trinitron every time, and that NEC is only 33% more than the cheapest shadow masks. Just consider how much energy is blocked by that pasta sieve behind the glass and never look at a shadow mask again.

I have a Viewsonic A70 and while I agree the text is a little fuzzy, it still is a decent monitor for $200 after rebate. I also have a year old KDS Avitron A7T with the Trinitron tube and a newer KDS A7TF with the flat screen and I like both of them as well. If you shop you should be able to find a KDS A7TF for around $250, I got mine from onvia.com for $217 with free shipping.

Which do you prefer between the Viewsonic A70 and the KDS AV-7TF? (Regardless of price...)

isnt A70 SM based? for an average computer user/gamer AGs are much better IMO. thus the KDS or Samsung gets my vote. i belive samsung comes with BNC input, which you may find useful.

Between the Viewsonic A70 and the KDS AV7TF, I would pick the AV7TF, even though it is usually a little more $. I have also heard that KDS gives very good support and RMA, if needed. I wouldn't know as both my KDS trinitron (and for that matter, so is my A70) monitors are working great.
