Hi,
I'm a student with a fairly limited budget. My ProView 15" monitor is stumbling on its last legs and I need a new monitor. I'd like to move up to an inexpensive 17", less than $250 if possible. I'd prefer to purchase one locally, perhaps from one of the usual chain stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Depot).
I bought a Viewsonic A70, which ran for $240 and currently has a $40 mail-in rebate. I've used Viewsonic monitors at work and am generally pleased with them. The store didn't have an A70 on display, but since the E771 received positive reviews and this model seemed to be quite similar to it (based on specs), I decided to try one out. I like the low-glare screen and the colors look reasonably bright, but the text is annoyingly fuzzy. It's much fuzzier than the text on my old $150 15" monitor, in fact. I could probably live with it, but I am having a hard time justifying spending a couple of hundred bucks on a monitor that I am not happy with. The resolution is set at 1024 x 768, the refresh rate is automatically set at 85 hz, and I am using a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro PCI video card (S3 Virge chipset) which is nothing special, but I only use it for business and internet apps... I'm not a gamer.
Local stores here also carry the KDS AV-7TF (FD Trinitron), Viewsonic A75F (which I believe is very similar to the EF70, uses the Diamondtron NF tube), NEC MultiSync 75 (shadow mask), NEC FE700 (FD Trinitron), Samsung 753DF (flat screen shadow mask), etc. I have not seen all of these monitors in person yet. Unfortunately many of these chain stores hook up only one video signal via a splitter to a bank of 10 or 12 monitors, so it's very difficult to judge image quality in the store since it is already significantly deteriorated thanks to the splitter.
I have about ten days to return the Viewsonic A70 I bought. If any of you could make any recommendations, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Aamir
