This is messed, but I THINK I know what's going on here. The magnet is basically passing by the pipe, which is also like a coil, that is short circuited, so it's pulling lot of current and creating lot of drag, much like a short circuited alternator would be hard to turn.

Maybe I got all that wrong, but it's freaking awesome nonetheless.

This is used for braking on high-speed roller coasters and some drop towers, to avoid the jerk of frictional braking (and also provide a degree of failure-proofing). Some idiot who was using it in industrial equipment decided to patent-troll the coaster manufacturers a few years ago -- I don't remember how it came out, but I hope it got tossed out because you shouldn't be able to patent fundamental physical principles.
