I find that entire region very interesting but I'll probably never get to visit it.

I always thought Bali was supposed to have beautiful beaches.

Did tourism ruin the beaches?

Some of the beaches in Bali are beautiful but they are nothing compare to Southern Lombok beaches. And, yes it is the drunken tourist that littered the beaches and road with garbage.

I was in Indo a few years back but only stayed in small islands. I am going back to Asia in a few months, let have an oversea ATOT meet.

My friends and I travel every year together to a different part of the world. Just got back from Rome and Barcelona. We were planning on hitting up Bali next year with a potential stop in Tokyo or Hong Kong before hand.

My one friend has been to Bali and actually had a pretty good time - albeit he did have a private villa with swimming pool. He also hit up night clubs, etc so his vacation may have been slightly different than yours. However, he didn't complain about how dirty it was, or how bad the food was. He said food was good and cheap, especially normally expensive seafood was relatively inexpensive. Other things like spa, massages, etc were also pretty inexpensive.

Actually, seeing the good and bad around the world is the biggest reason to be a world traveler. Nothing will make you appreciate what you have like seeing people who have it worse. Nothing will motivate you to do more than seeing how good things can be.

I've never understood the narrow minded mentality of non-exposure. It's the core of the Ugly American stereotype.
