Well that's the only three I can think of off the top of my head so feel free to contribute others. I'm more of a Hives fan than anything else but have been interested in the whole genre. Seems like it's been all American bands with Brit backing, at least in the beginning.

Do what I want cause I can and if I don't because I wanna
Be ignored by the stiff and the bored because I'm gonna
Spit and retrieve cause I give and receive because I wanna
Gonna get through your head what the mystery man said because I'm gonna
Hate to say I told you so; Alright; Come on
I do believe I told you so...
Now it's all out and you knew! Cause I wanted to...

You could include The Strokes in that genre as well, although i'm not so sure i'd label it as "indie rock" though.

Nonetheless, it's good stuff.

I like the Hives and Black Rebel Motorcyle Club myself the best. I think the strokes are wildly over rated. I saw them in Chicago a month ago and they were awful. They only played for about 45-50 minutes and they seemed very cocky and arrogant. Most of there songs sound all the same and get kinda bland.

Maaann... hardly any of that is really indie rock--ESPECIALLY the Strokes. They're a put-together band just like the BSB. BRMC was the only thing listed that comes remotely close.

Well I guess by technical definitions the Strokes are indie, but 11345 is pushing being not indie and may even be a sister label for something like Capitol (but not Capitol) as well as the other labels.

All in all, most of those bands listed are just part of some new quick raw indie fad and lack any real talent. Hives, Vines and White Stripes all basically sound the same. Every Strokes song is the same. BRMC isn't bad though.

I'd consider indie rock to be those artists who have released a record outside of the usual channels, using an independent label or one that they themselves have created.

You tend not to hear much indie rock on the radio. (unlike the White Stripes, the Hives, et al.)

Proof? I thought The Strokes were the starters of the indie rock trend into the mainstream. Not to say everyone after them was manufactured - just that once they got a large contract and became popular, everyone else started looking for similar-sounding bands to sign and let loose.

music genres can be classified by their label? So if one band is jazz, and the other is metal, they get labeled as Indy???

I no understandy. I wrote indie rock. Getting away from the literal meaning of an rock band that's independent, it's also a specific sound/genre of rock music.

I hate to be the grumpy old man in this thread, but all four of the bands in question (Hives, Vines, Stripes, Strokes) are all pretty dismal, IMO. They're not doing anything the Pixies, Jawbox and others didn't already do 10 years ago.

Both bands I mentioned are well worth a listen, by the way. Might be a tad hard to find Jawbox CD's since they got ratf*cked by their label a few years back. How ironic that similar bands are the new darlings of the music industry now.

I think that Jawbox's desoto records stuff is officially out of print, so perhaps a PM to me requesting mp3's isn't out of order? I'd be happy to offer them up.

my bad... carry on, nothing to see here ;)

I like all all four bands mentioned, but I really don't see why they are getting as hyped as they are though.

Now means: bands that have kitsch appeal to big labels and listeners because they sound like an amalgam of all the good indie bands that got swept under the rug because they couldn't make millions of dollars for Sony executives by selling out arenas.
