Mueller issues 32 new charges in Manafort, Gates case.
damn they are going to get buried. wonder how quickly they will cut a deal?
Wasn't Manafort's trial set for May 14?
I stand corrected, thanks.No. Prosecution requested that date, but the court denied. I can't remember if they set a tentative date after that or not. I honestly don't think it matters as he'll never get to trial anyway.
Well, just saw new report that Gates is in fact not going to plea bargain. Hmmm ... certainly explains the new charges.
Some reporting indicates he was dancing with Mueller for a month and rejected several deals. Mueller decided to drop the hammer.
Stupid move on his part. The latest charges appear to be all tax related, coming from FINCEN. He's letting them know he knows everything. Mueller isn't playing. Which is fine with me.
I figure that Gates hasn't been entirely forthcoming or that he can't tell the Special Counsel more than they already know. The latter would be extremely unfortunate for Gates.
Just saw an interview where a reporter (can't remember name or affiliation) slyly suggested that their sources were telling them it was the latter.
A former top adviser to Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign indicted by the special counsel was expected to plead guilty as soon as Friday afternoon, according to two people familiar with his plea agreement, a move that signals he is cooperating with the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
The adviser, Rick Gates, is a longtime political consultant who once served as Mr. Trump’s deputy campaign chairman. The plea deal could be a significant development in the investigation — a sign that Mr. Gates plans to offer incriminating information against his longtime associate and the former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, or other members of the Trump campaign in exchange for a lighter punishment.
Well, that was a rollecoaster ride. Gates rumored to plead guilty, turns out he's just thinking about it. Mueller drops more charges. Gates has no choice but to cooperate. And the whole country is watching on the edge of the seat.
So what's' the over/under on presidential pardons here?
So what's' the over/under on presidential pardons here?
Hard to say without knowing the full extent of the charges. Most of the federal crimes that have been charged so far are also state crimes so pardoning people would expose Trump to further damage without actually helping his associates very much.
If it turns out that the charges for important people are mostly or entirely federal I bet Trump pardons every single one. He will do anything to save himself.
