Its interesting that the police officer isn't charged with assaulting another officer. If any civilian even as much as touched a police K9 they would get slapped with assaulting an officer.

You don't have to watch the video, it is there if you want to click on it in the news article. Try reading the article without watching the vid. I know many people get pretty upset when they see an animal being abused, but it isn't as bad as some vid's I have seen but I thought I should put NSFL just in case. Yea well in the media they have to say allegedly even if there is video proof.

i would like to hear what a k-9 trainer has to say about it...I've never seen any dog treated like that.

I'm sure if the dog tries to bite you or acts up, you have to do something to gain control and dominance?

Just throwing this out there... http://leerburg.com/corrections.htm

"...When a dog shows handler aggression or animal aggression, the handler (in a assertive, firm, calm manner) simply says "NO" and lifts the dog's front feet of the ground. When that happens, the collar tightens and takes the air away from the dog. There is no pain involved with this correction, but it has a profound effect on the dog."

is there a full video that shows whether or not the dog was being aggressive to the handler or others....or if the dog seemed to be behaving fine?

Yes full video and witnesses who said the dog was doing nothing, and no, that is not dog training the guy is doing watch the vid before making assumptions.

All I will say is that if this happened in a schutzhund arena, we would probably be using different judgment.

I'm going to withhold any judgment until a full investigation is performed...I don't know enough about the dog, handler, and the situation, to really say whether or not someone should be charged with "felony animal abuse and fired", per your average commenter.

Several years ago they had a K9 cop here that left his dog in his police vehicle overnight. Dog was in there for 12+ hours and died from the heat. How the hell can someone leave a dog (or kid) in a car for hours on end during a Phoenix summer?

Let me guess, the investigation will find that the police officer "was following proper established procedures"...

The description is far worse than the video IMO; the leash whipping was over the top though

The video posted Wednesday shows an officer using a leash to lift the dog to its hind legs,
not so bad, although the situation doesn't APPEAR to warrant it

then striking the dog's middle section with what appears to be another leash.
WTF

He then lifts the dog into the air by the leash, and the dog is seen swinging around once.
not so bad, although the situation doesn't APPEAR to warrant it

My family is pretty big in the dog training community, and has trained K-9.
My guess as to what I'm seeing is that this officer had probably trained his dog using a choke chain. His dog was disobeying some command (I know we don't see that) and lacking his tool, he did this crap
I've been to a lot of dog trials and in the end those guys (shock collars, hitting the dog) always take home the trophies

Its the cop's word against the dog's. Who do you think the judge is going to automatically believe?

So would hanging Police officers by the neck when they fail an assignment in Police Academy and whipping them make them better Officers and stop all the misconduct taking place in the U.S. now?
