Mother offended by trooper's accusations of meth use during traffic stop

A young Indiana mother could hardly believe what a state trooper said to her during a traffic stop.

Stephanie Foltz was pulled over for speeding in Tippecanoe County when the routine stop took a turn. Foltz and her husband, Matt, recorded audio of the exchange.

"When did you start smoking meth?" Trooper Thomas Manning asked.
"I've never smoked meth in my life," Foltz replied.
"What happened to your teeth?" Manning said.
"Childbirth," Foltz said.
"Are you saying your children did that to you?"
"During pregnancy, they take calcium out of your body and the first place it comes from is teeth," Stephanie said.
"I don't believe you," the trooper told her. "I know they do take calcium from your body, but they don't do it in that way."

She was ticketed for running 73 in a 60 mph zone.

She says people need to be less judgmental.

"I'm taking care of my kids. They come first. I don't have the money to fix my teeth," she said.

State police have listened to the recording, but found no violations of rules or policies. They did, however, make it a teaching moment, speaking with the trooper about what he did well and what he could have done better.

Here is the real teaching moment. He seems to be violating her HIPPA rights. How does issuing a speeding ticket then lead to discussing her medical condition, except to harass and humiliate her? And he has no compelling reason to be discussing her health or medical issues with her, at all. Someone could be directly prosecuted or sued in civil court for acting like that, and they have the audio recording to back it up.

And I bet this legal possibility hasn't even crossed their minds yet. Even EMTs responding to a medical emergency have to keep the HIPPA laws in mind all the time, or they can get in a lot of trouble, and even fired from their jobs. Violating the HIPPA laws can lead to jail time and fines. And the police are also not exempt from them.

And I would like to know what they thought he did well, besides pull over a legitimate speeder.

Meth head mother gets offended news at 11....

Seriously though, information on extreme tooth damage from pregnancy appears to be limited. IF the cause of this woman's issues was her pregnancy then she did a piss poor job eating a diet that provided what her body needed during pregnancy.

Even if poor there are programs (WIC being the main one) to ensure critical needs are met.

How is there is a HIPPA violation? He wasn't acting as a health care provider but making a comment. She volunteered information about her pregnancy and she appears to be the one that shared the whole story with the media. Lots of wrong, but stop making it up.

Check out the link with her picture. I think you are right about her diet.

Also, the trooper looks to be the skinny meth head.

Some people also don't do a very good job of taking care of their teeth. Take someone with weak enamel and mix that with poor dental hygiene and you've got yourself some messed up teeth.

Even if it were from drugs, if she was clean now, who cares? She wasn't acting oddly in the audio and all she was doing was speeding (not by much either). The cop was out of line.

She was not volunteering information as in openly sharing, she was under duress at the time, and because of the situation she felt compelled to answer only to defend herself. That's not willfully sharing your medical history.

I've seen Mt. Dew and Cherry Coke cause "meth mouth", and generally bad dental hygiene, especially with teens / young adults, that don't brush regularly, and drink soda like water.

No, they never did meth.

A lot of people (60%) have unhealthy teeth due to genetics. No matter how well they take care of them or with regular dentist appointments they get worse.

BS, she still volunteered the information. Also still not a HIPPA violation.
