Doesn't sound like he was joking at all.

Cox also referred to the protesters as "thugs physically threatening legally-elected state legislators & governor" and said "You're damn right I advocate deadly force,"

I think him claiming it was a joke was a retroactive attempt to save his job-he was pretty clear the first time around.

Given what is happening right now in Libya-where foreign mercenaries are gunning down protestors and planes are bombing crowds in the capitol, if that was supposed to be a joke it was beyond poor taste.

I don't think this guy had the proper temperment to be an AAG and am not sorry to see him get the boot.

Agreed, he should have been booted out so hard his grandchildren will taste leather.

He was the deputy AG so he could be fired. If he had been elected, he couldn't be.

He played the oppressed card, it's not about his comment, but free speech rights.

But he also said public employees shouldn't have to surrender their free-speech rights.

"I think we're getting down a slippery slope here in terms of silencing people who disagree," he told the television station.

It feeds well into that sort of anti-government paranoia, they're out to get him and all good citizens.

We want them fired, not fired at, for not doing their jobs

Words mean things, even tiny prepositions. And with power comes responsibility.

Conservatives get hard over seeing shit like the Kent State Massacre. Not exactly a surprise one of them would say something like that.

His comments were certainly not appropriate, though I do think the police should do more to make sure the idiots protesting don't interfere with people going about their actual job.

Booting him out or an unpaid suspension seems appropriate, but I do agree with him on one point that it can be a very dangerous slippery slope when you start firing people for expressing their views. Political correctness has a habit of growing wildly out of control with this kind of stuff.

Yeh, he was just expressing his views, that the opposition should be killed...

So said the guy calling for shooting of others expressing their political views. The asshole deserved to be fired for saying something wildly inappropriate, especially in this current climate, not for expressing a contrary political view.

This is a political view: I disagree with your position on this issue.
This is not: You should be shot for your position on this issue.

See the difference? There is noting overly PC about taking issue with statements like the latter.
