If unions honestly provide the value to workers they claim, it should not be a problem to move away from a closed shop environment and have workers voluntarily join.

ALL states should be right to work states. If a shop turns union and you do not want to join, it should be illegal to fire you for not joining the union.

Can those that were forced to pay dues get them back from the union?

Right to work means you cannot be fired if you are in a non-union shop that suddenly goes union against your wishes and you do not join it.

Why do you think a good worker should be fired for NOT joining a union?

And illegal to fire you for joining the union.

Organized labor brought about more changes in the workplace then un-organized labor.

Why can wal-mart pay poverty level wages? Because the workers are not allowed to have a union.

I wonder how many people replying to this thread have ever been in a union? Have any of yall ever worked in poor or dangerous conditions?

Unions have brought about a lot of positive change for middle class workers in this country.

Ask yourself this question. Why were unions created in the first place?

And most of the union haters here probably owe most of their current working conditions they enjoy (hours/day/week. wages, etc) indirectly to unions.

I don't think anyone denies that. I think most wonder if the time for unions has passed, however.

I like your logic. Nothing that at one point was needed will ever serve a purpose other than that for which it was created. Got it.

Ummm, no. They pay low wages because they not only hire unskilled labor, but they hire some of the worst unskilled labor in the country.

Aside from that, the workers aren't "not allowed to have a union"; the workers don't want a union. Big unions have been trying to get into Wal-Mart for a long time now and the workers keep saying no.

I guess unions bring so much positive, that people don't feel worthy to be in the presence of their awesomeness; thus the need for laws requiring
workers to join.

Can't wait for the next Battle of the Miller Road overpass in Dearborn... hopefully the modern day equivalents to Reuther and Frankensteen don't cave to the next would-be Harry Bennett and his thugs.

If a worker doesn't want to join what's stopping them from finding a new job?

That's an argument for why unions are no longer needed; employee mobility is, oh I don't know, a billion times what it was in the early days of the industrial revolution.

Maybe exactly the point, as right to work states will soon have the most exploited workers in the nations. Then thus proving repealing right to work laws will be an immediate need. Its says something about gutless Indiana legislators, who said yes when the wiser Ohio legislatures said no. And we already know what is happening in Wisconsin.

Engaging in class warfare is never smart.
