Indian television (in the US anyway) has always been littered with sub-par soaps, constant adverts about fortune tellers (and other "religious" figures), irritating kids/ family shows and thinly veiled patriotic copies of successful shows from other countries.
Recently (relatively speaking and afaik), even the news has become decadent. Imagine beating a dead horse until its carcass is pulp and then some more - this is what the "News" is like. Stories are grossly exaggerated and the equivalent to tabloid talkies. The BBC wrote an article on the state of Indian news industry and I wholeheartedly agree with their view on this subject.
So what?s the thing I just witnessed? I walked in on my Dad watching the news and after some story about a kid that fell down a well (done in very poor taste by lowering a "reporter" down the well with a camera) was the story on WWE. This wasn't an investigation or a lighthearted look at the performers but a move by move commentary of a match between The Undertaker and some heel (Khali? - Didn?t quite catch the name while laughing out loud). The "reporter" was even more passionate about the "match" than the enthusiasm shown by ring side commentators (as I remember from a childhood long ago). The news piece was completely serious in tone and discussing the happenings in The Undertaker - "heel" storyline as if they were based in reality.
God, I hate Indian television more than I hate 24hr news channels in the US. It?s embarrassing
