My Indian friend invited me to some Indian celebration saturday night. He said it was related to farming or harvests or something. All attendees are required to wear turbans

What is this holiday/celebration called?

I believe its an old tradition from way back when as this was the time that the crops would be harvested on the farms, so they celebrate this.

Us Indians love to party. :)

Hmm..he said there'd be an open bar as well :) I guess that could be interpreted as "tradiitional"

open bar means good old fashioned "Leg n peg"

... chicken tandoori legs and pegs of whiskey

It's about the founding of the Khalsa, and essentially the founding/solidification of our religion. Usually you go to a temple and pray (or eat/drink/party all night). There should be all sorts of dancing and maybe fireworks since it's pretty much new year, but you're not required to wear turbans, unless it's like a themed party or something (wtf). You are however required to cover your head during prayer for respect for God and your humility (paraphrased).

This is the only time of year I don't like. You see......... they have a parade and my house is inbetween "Little India" and the Sikh temple. So from 9am till 4-5pm there is no parking in front of my house. My street has only room for 1 car to pass through :p. The street parking fills up and a traffic jam of cars going both ways.

The only thing I like about this day is that along the parade route people give out free food and you can get 50lb sacks of onions & potatoes for $5 each :)

Cheers,
