though pakistan is majority muslim I believe its a "Secular" country (that is what CNN was saying a while back or atleast the present person in command and the military are secular). Pakistan by itself is not a religious country. They do not have laws for women to cover with a burka, women are free to wear anything they want, even jeans. In a way pakistan provides lots more religious freedom to its citizens than say certian middle east countries.

Is that why their flag is green with a crescent on it (Crescent = Islamic symbolic equivalent of cross)? Pakistan, unlike India, is *not* a secular country. Pakistan was founded on the basis of religion. The first act Pakistan ever took was to declare itself a Muslim state. Now, there's nothing necessarily wrong with having an official state religion. Most European countries have state religions. But in Pakistan, freedom of religion does not exist, as it forbidden in Islam. Religious minorities, those that were not slaughtered or driven out after the 1940's partition, are routinely persecuted there. There was an incident hardly a month ago in which an entire congregation of Pakistani Christians were slaughtered by a gang of Muslims while they were at church. At the government level, Pakistan is 100% Islamic. How many Hindus, Christians, or Sikhs are members of Pakistani Parliament? Oh woops, I forgot, there's a millitary dictatorship there now. The government of Pakistan has always been run by Islamic fundamentalists that are hell bent on wresting Kashmir from India, so as to distract their people from their real problems.

There was a good read on this at the National Review today.

<< Pakistan by itself is not a religious country. >>

Are you insane? Pakistan created the Taliban. Pakistan is involved in every Islamic terrorist jihad from Chechnya to Kashmir to Israel. Pakistan is home to the fundamentalist religious schools that trained and indoctrinated most of the Taliban. Maybe they don't have a law on the books mandating women to wear veils in public, but I'd like to see a woman walk through a Pakistani street wearing western clothes without getting stoned to death.

Muslim = a follower of the teaching of Islam. Pakistan is an islamic country. When beloved patriot and India seperated, a majority of the Islamic population went to beloved patriot, the Hindu population remained in India

Terrorism has been happening since kasjmir was occupied by india, and it will keep happening until india decides to do what the UN wanted to happen with kasjmir when the problem started, a simple referendum in the kasjmir province on what state the people there want to belong to.

yet, 40 or so years later, india still refuses to hold that referendum, so much for democracy.

aleus,
it is kashmir, not kasjmir. the british colonialized the indian sub-continent, not the spanish.

kashmir was not occupied by india. kashmir joined the republic of india when pakistan invaded in 1948. a part of kashimr is occupied by pakistan, though.

terrorism has not existed in kashmir for 40 years. more like 15. let's see how long terrorism lasts there if pakistan stops supplying arms, money and pakistani and arab terrorists.

as far as a referendum goes, why should india do that? kashmir is a part of india. i don't know about you, but i sure as hell wouldn't much care for any UN resolution asking us to have a referendum in florida or kansas or california! do you remember what happened the last time some states tried to break away from the union? civil war.

Damn right. It's especially stupid when people from the U.S. start talking about referendums for Kashmir, because the U.S. went to Civil War when South Carolina tried to secede back in the 1860's. The ruler of Kashmir merged his nation with India when it was formed in the 1940's. At the time, both Pakistan and India agreed to this setup. Kashmir *is* part of India. However, the Pakistanis decided to invade Kashmir after a few years because they felt that they had some God given right to it. Eventually, India agreed to let Pakistan have 1/3 of Kashmir, in exchange for peace back in the 1960's. BIG FSCKING MISTAKE. Since then, they've kept invading Kashmir over and over again. I think the only way this will be resolved if India cracks down hard on the Islamic terrorists operating in Kashmir and wipes them all out. They need to adopt an Israeli approch. Everytime a Muslim suicide bomber kills an Israeli, the Israelis go and kill 10 Muslim thugs. There needs to be a similar approach in Kashmir.
