Burning a bride is definitely a big problem in Indian sub continent but on a decline though.

Burning a bride is definitely a big problem in Indian sub continent but on a decline though.

The 'bride burning' is actually a practice originating the Northern Indian state of Rajasthan.

It started during the times of Muslim invasions when women would throw themselves into a fire in order not be raped, tortured or taken into Harems by ISlamic invaders.

If you've honestly been to India at any time in the past 20 years you would see that it has changed a lot. I have also not seen this on any major news sites, Indian, American or European so I would take it with a grain of salt.

I looked at BBC, Deutsche, MSNBC, CNN and Hindustantimes and didn't see anything.

Sorry about that, I don't like to use the term "rape" in this manner often, or ever, if possible, but here I did want to use it to further illustrate the point being made.

If you look at the wikipedia article a couple posts up, here's a direct quote:

This has nothing to do with the Hindu culture or religion. It's just a stereotype based on a few psychotic pricks. And if you think this stuff happens in only third world countries, think again. Remember that article a couple weeks back on the guy in New Orleans who DISMEMBERED HIS WIFE AND COOKED HER? Accusing an entire nation of condoning wife burning is like accusing the American culture of encouraging dismemberment and cannibalization. The acts of a few are NOT the result of any cultural differences.

That said, general spousal abuse (both mental and physical) is a problem in India, primarily because divorce isn't really seen as an acceptable alternative. When you're married in an Indian family, you're married for life. This has both positives and negatives in my mind. One the plus side, families stick together through hell or high water instead of separating at the drop of a hat like I've noticed here. The negatives are obvious as well. However, I believe the divorce rate has been climbing the past few years.

If India really had such major problems with treatment of women, it would be kind of hard to imagine that it's had a woman leader (something even the US hasn't) and one of the largest and most educated female workforces on the planet.

It is quite interesting to know that even people today are fighting for the good side in things to uphold harmony. That is a very good thing. People are not meant to be wild animals, but to welcome civility into our homes and communities, worldwide.

That is terrible to hear that women are being mistreated in India, awful. I hope that things get better over there. Good luck to Indochina!
