Indexing in WinXP...Good/Bad?

I have had indexing on my hdd for a while and I never thought twice about it, but then my friend said it is a real killer. Is it good or bad? Now...*laugh* my computer sometimes pauses when i go to my computer or do open... and am going through my files. See i have an logical partition for my data and now the computer takes a while longer to access it. I mean its the same hard drive, why would it be slow? Any responses to indexing and my partition would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is not General Hardware related.
