Indexing and archiving scanned documents

I want to scan, archive and index all my bills and paper printed stuff in an easily accessible database. I have the dilemma of not knowing what software to use. I want to use something which won?t go out of style anytime soon, something that can be easily ported into other applications for further process.

What do you guys use to get away from the mountain of papers that keeps pilling up each month with the arrival of new bills, etc.

Any idea will be highly appreciated.
