I'm running Win2kSP3/NTFS and just realized that the Index Server services are disabled by defualt. Will there be a performance hit if I enable it? What does the IS improves besides file searching?

Not much, the service is designed to run in the background when the system is idle so you shouldnt notice a performance differance. One thing to keep in mind, if you have tons of files the index will get large and use a notable amount of disk space.
