INDEPENDENT CONTROL OVER DUAL MONITORS

Good morning from downunder Australia.
I have been reading through this topic and it seems that I may need some or a lot of help..

Firstly, I'm a novice at this stuff, so my questions and answers are in layman's terms.

Secondly, this is a work related question problem that I believe should have a simple answer, again in layman's terms..

Okay, here we go.. and my apologies for being long-winded..

I'm setting up a mobile trade shop in a large truck selling tools. for example something in the like with "Snap-on Tools" if anybody is familiar. I have set up the computer system in the truck running XP with dual monitors and a ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center dual video card etc..

All runs fine and does the simple things that it's suppose to do - extend, clone, expand.

My initial purpose for setting up the 2 monitors is so I could use the second monitor as an advertising and promotional tool towards the customers that walk into the truck, whilst I carry out transactions and sales and whatever else I need to do away from their view.

So for example I want to run a Powerpoint presentation on the 2nd monitor, though I want to first peruse the presentation confirming that is the one I want to run.

Now here's my problem,

I know and understand that I can drag the presentation across to that monitor, though I don't have that monitor in my view as it is facing the other way and so I tend to either lose my mouse pointer or placing the presentation nice and centered to that screen is a task, or if you have multiple pages and files open on your main screen and you start to move them around as you do to see simultaneously you tend to push them onto the other screen. and this may not be evident or you don't know that you've done this without getting up and around to the other monitor to see where things end up.

Is there anyway of taking INDEPENDENT CONTROL over each screen and controling it from the main screen.

For example a picture in picture type situation like on your TV set when watching one main channel you can have a small box displaying whats in the other and you can drag and drop onto that as you would with any other file to file moving you do.

and/or

have control of what you can send to the second screen by "right click and send to"

I have spent a few hours in the control and preference setup but other that the common three setups of "extend clone and expand"

I don't know what else to do but it sure would be great if it was simple.

Thanks everybody for taking time out to read this, and hope you can help with a simple solution.

Cheers

Set any program to have focus, press Ctrl+Alt+Right and it moves to second monitor. (Press Ctrl+Alt+PgUp and it maximizes if you didn't already have it maximized.)

If you have your Windows settings right, then the Taskbar is only showing on your primary monitor, so you can control any program you want very easily.

Thank you LokutusofBorg for your reply and info...

I will try this as I begin to stock the truck and fire up the PC again
..
.... what mode should I have the monitors in.. I presume extended..

... and in setting "focus" for whichever program... (whee do I find the focus control/command) can you apply the same to a particular individual document that you may have open without having the whole of Microsoft word opening in the 2nd monitor for instance when you open a second document..
..
... I'll keep troubleshooting this as I get bits and pieces of help and info..
..
... thanks thus far

Kind Regards

Yep, just use the "extend my desktop" setting.

Since the taskbar is only showing on your primary monitor, all you have to do to focus a program is select its icon in the taskbar.

To have individual control over multiple Word documents, there's a setting in Word that makes each document have its own taskbar icon. I know Excel has this same setting too, so I presume all Office programs do it the same way.

I think once you install and use Winsplit you'll see that what you're wanting to do is really easy. You can move programs around with a single key press. It's very easy, and moving stuff back and forth from your main monitor to the one you have facing customers will be second nature for you after a little while doing it.

Okay,
I've had a look at the "winsplit-revolution" very interesting. seems like it is a valuable application to utilize.

As this is work based, I have our IT Tech coming in today to install a few hardware & software items concerning our accounting & POS for the Trade Truck,.

He initially installed the dual video card but had to drop everything to rush off to an emergency.

I'll pass your info to him, and see what we can configure.

I'll keep you posted on the outcome. fingers crossed :)

Cheers

Hey daw123 ... Yep Great Find this ULTRAMON
..
.... I read through the overview and feature tour and it covers a lot of control..

... So.. and only if you know.. will it work in conjunction with the Dual Video card that came with the hardware etc..
. What am I trying to say here ??? doh!! :)
... do I leave the installed software that came with the Video card in-place... will ULTRAMON override or work in harmony with... ??

It also mentions that the taskbar for each application moved to the screen you allocate, goes with it...
....... In my case I'm unable to see the second monitor to go to that task bar to recall the application or close it... can it be done from the main monitor.. can I see whats going on there like a picture in picture type set-up..
...
... sorry for all the questions... I'm happy to purchase this program.. should I direct these questions to them...
... oops!!! just noticed a support forum on their site.. I'll have a quick look over there..

..
....I will look into Ultramon... I'll keep you guys updated in how I'm traveling with this...
....
... Cheers

You can leave the software (and obviously the drivers) in place that came with the GPU card. At least it was okay for me when I left ATI Catalyst Control Centre in place. I'm assuming its the same with the Nvidia s/w.

Note that the first (main) monitor is on the left and the second monitor is on the right with a physical split in the middle between the two.

The attached screenshot shows the two monitors. Essentially the icons for the active / inactive windows are shown on the second replicated taskbar. You also have two buttons at the top of the active window (I'm not sure what the proper name is for this) which allows you to switch that window between the monitors (second button) and also stretch the window between the two monitors (first button). You can also set up hotkeys to do this, amongst other functions. You also have the 'switch between monitors' function in the right-click menu. I have highlighted all this stuff in the attached screenshot.

You can close applications which are shown on the second monitor via the first (main) monitor. The only thing I haven't been able to do, and this could be because I haven't set it up correctly, is switch an application shown on the second monitor to the first monitor only using the first monitor.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Below is an enlarged screenshot of the right click menu and buttons on the top of the active window (Photobucket made my screenshot tiny)

Edit 2: Spelling. Argh, I need a spell checker.
