Incrementing network connection # and hidden network cards

I'm currently using WinXP.

Has anyone had the problem of the Network Connections gradually incrementing number? (ex. "Local Area Connection 4"). There is still only one connection displayed for LAN connections but the number following the words "Local Area Connection" spontaneously increments over time.

Also, I've noticed that the same thing happens to the name of my network card.

The name thing it self isn't such a big deal but it seems like the network card is named "[Model Name] #2" because windows thinks that there are two network cards with the same name on my comp (I only have one card in the comp). When I set the IP address of the card I get a message that basically says the IP address is already assigned to another network card on my computer. The other card is hidden because it is not physically in the computer. Here's a pic of the message: Message Pic.

Anyone know what's going on?

Does this spontaneously happen? or have you moved the NIC from one slot to another without uninstallign it first?
