Incremental Video Card Upgrade?

memo

Golden Member
My current spec are:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Patriot 2GB DDR 400
XFX 7800GT

I play World of Warcraft almost exclusively. Lately though in 25 man raids (more people more spell effects etc) I've been noticing a lot of frame rate issues. I'm pretty sure it's not the connection issue because it never happens when I'm soloing.

Do you guys think my CPU is the bottle neck? Video Card? RAM? My best guess is it's the video card and I'd like to upgrade to a 9500gt or 9600gt but would like to keep my upgrade cost to under $100. If I get either of those cards would I get better performance, or is it useless because of my processor?

Upgrade your motherboard, CPU, and RAM. WoW is very GPU and RAM dependent in big raids. Sell your S939 stuff, then buy a cheap, used AM2 or C2D setup from someone for $100-150.

^^This. And a shiny new 4830 for <$100 wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks for the advice. So are you saying the 7800gt video card would be good enough if I upgrade to a C2D setup? Or should I still upgrade that?

If you can afford to, definitely upgrade to a 9800gt/4830 or better. However, a CPU/RAM/board upgrade will be more noticeable than a GPU upgrade at this point.
