Incremental Updates in Cloning HDD?

Hi.

I am currently using a really good HDD cloning app once a week to make sure my backup drive is an up to date reflection of the drive I mainly boot into.

Since both my drives have big empty space, this doesn't take long, perhaps 30 mins, but back in the day, I used to pay for the Pro version of XXclone to have the option of incremental updates in cloning. XX doesn't employ the usual imaging, but it also does not work as well as the apps which do use imaging.

I just discovered there are some cloning apps which use imaging---all pro-- which afford incremental updating option. Macrium Pro is one.

Someone smart once told me incremental updates are not a good idea in this endeavor, but I was never clear re why.

Might I solicit feedback on that part?

Thanks!

It was there in Acronis True Image, it's there in Macrium Reflect Pro which I use, I never do it! can never trust it myself

what I do, is I install the OS, all updates, then create an image, then install all drivers, then create a 2nd image, then install all software and configure them then create an image

then I use SyncBackSE to make a mirror of my drive to my external HDD

Example:

I have a 23 GB Software folder

I change a few files or update a few on my original folder

Then I simply launch SyncBackSE, it finds the changes between my original source and the destination which is the external HDD, then it shows me what is going to be deleted and what are the new files that will be copied just as a preview, then I hit continue and it makes my external HDD again, a clone of my sources

I configure multiple folders like Videos, software, etc...

this all takes me anywhere between 10 seconds to 5 minutes depending on how much files I change but it is the fastest and most trust worthy method I've tried

mirroring FTW

PS: Mirroring in SyncBackSE is better than the backup option because mirroring makes a replica of the source on the destination folder/drive. it can do this over networks as well if configured

Wow. What you share is entirely new to me!!!!! TEN SECONDS? I will now delve re SynchBackSE.

But.....can you please elaborate re why you don't trust the incremental update option in the Marcium Pro I am looking into?

Thank U!

Because I don't know what is it monitoring exactly? I use these kinda programs for creating images of my partition for the sake of quickly going back to a restore image should any bad driver or bad software mess up my system, but they cannot be relied on for backup purposes such as the one you mentioned

SyncBack is the king of this, they have a free version, but for 20 USD or soe the extra features of the SE edition is worth every penny.

I introduced a friend in the NEtherlands to this and now he uses it daily

the dude is crazy he has his 520 GB SSD partitioned into 6 partitions, one for music, one for movies, software, video editing, Temp (seriously! a temp partition instead of a temp folder LOL)

So he uses Syncback SE to backup everything from every partition into his external HDD within like seconds!

The speed at which it finds the differences between the source and destination are mind blowing

Wow. I am getting this Now! "Can not be relied on" part. That is what the guy who, a while back, only yelled NO, DON DO THAT! seemed to imply, but without elaborating.

Yr friend has a TEMP PARTITION!! OMG, lol

Thanks again for taking the time to explain!
