Incredibly slow wireless on PS3 and 360

So I've been dealing with this for years, but it's finally getting to me. I'm tired of waiting a day for updates or demos to download. I'm pulling probably 10K/sec on my 360 and PS3 for some reason. I can sit right beside them with my laptop and get 12Mbit /sec, so it's not just an issue of a slow connection to the ISP or crappy wireless signal. Anyone have thoughts? Are there ports I need to open or features I need to enable/disable on my router? Do I just have to live with it? A wired connection isn't possible without rewiring my house.

Is your wired connection really fast? Test that first.

If it's fast on wired, then maybe your wirelss portion of your router is broken.

Next, see if there are any firmware updates to your router, try those.

Next, if that doesn't work, try a new router.

You shouldn't need to open ports to get decent speeds.

I'd put the console in the DMZ, see if that helps. What kind of wireless adapter do you have for the 360?

Don't know about wired. I don't have a way to run a wired connection to it.

Updated router (WRT54G v5) to latest firmware (1.02.5)

Firmware upgrade seemed to speed it up a tiny bit.

you should def. try to use a wired connection and see what your speeds are.

With my wireless, I can still download pretty fast. But normally I'm on wired.

Change channels on your router/access point to 1,6,11 to see what works best. Just because the laptop works well doesn't mean you don't have interference problems.

Remove sources of interference from your game systems - bluetooth, phones, etc and keep them away from the client adapter (game system or wireless adapter).

Also agree to try wired, if that works well then you know its a wireless problem which is VERY common with the technology.

I have the same issue with my new PS3. Have a 10MB DSL which works great for all my wired / wireless PC's but crawls on the ps3. Tried just about everything accept running a cable through the house, don't think the wife would like that. lol

It uses your houses electricity to send the signal to your box. I've never used them, however, I was moments away from purchasing one at one point then I decided to try wireless one last time, and it worked out for me.

Would definitely recommend this. I own that exact model, and have had no problems with it other than having to unplug and re-plug when resetting the modem. Ive lived in 5 houses since I bought it, has worked in every single one.

Has been much more reliable than wireless for me.

Have you tried dd-wrt firmware? It is so much better than the Linksys firmware.

How many systems (including computers) do you have on the wireless connection at once?
