Incredible photo essay from the streets of New Orleans

I found this link in an article on MeFi. It is an incredible series of 197 photos taken over several days beginning on Sunday before the hurricane hit. The photographer is an amateur who lives (lived) in New Orleans. He includes explanations and his observations with each photo. Most of the shots were taken in and around the downtown area, French Quarter, etc.

Sorry, it's not very political (though I'm sure both sides can find tidbits of ammunition), but IMO he has a great eye and offers a fascinating look into some of what was going on in New Orleans. His commentary is just as interesting as his photos.

I was surprised by how normal so many of these pictures looked. They pose a dramatic contrast to all the pictures of chaos and devastation we've seen on TV. I also thought his comments about looting and the NO Police were interesting.

It didn't seem so bad until the flooding came along. Looks like most of the buildings withstood the wind rather well.

Damn looters looting footlocker for fubu stuff.

It doesn't look bad at all, not like I thought it would. I had read that the water only rose 1 foot an hour after the levees broke and those pictures seemed to confirm that. I think the death toll of 10,000 might be overstated. I wondered how that many people could be killed by water only rising 1 foot/hr. From the pictures it seems clear the Katrina didn't kill that many, how many were killed by the flooding afterwards?? I wish they would get some educated estimates about the death toll out.

Simply the best coverage I have seen yet. If we want to talk about failures, traditional media can't seem to report the facts anymore.

Anybody have any other links to factual information? One page with a clear time line of events would be very helpfull to me.

BTW this is the first detailed thing that didn't leave me angry. I don't feel a great need to blame anybody, except that I now place journalists slightly below looters.

These photos clearly demonstrate that the city of New Orleans adequately weathered the storm...the extent of damage and flooding was fairly minimal and easily manageable...that is until the levees broke.

I found the commentary interesting, particularly the attitudes of those who chose to remain in the city...a combination of people not taking the storm seriously, or perhaps not truly understanding the implications of the city flooding should a levee break.

The pictures of looting truly disgusted me...I have said in previous threads on this topic that I can understand people stealing food and water to provide for their survival...but carrying raft loads of merchandise out of stores...wonder where these idiots planned to keep their loot once the city started flooding...we keep hearing how some of these people had no way to leave the city...yet they managed to find ways to cart off tons of stolen merchandise...simply amazing.

Yeah, it's easy to imagine some of those folks laughing about Chicken Little or the boy who cried wolf. Little did they know ...

Kodakgallery.com appears to have pulled the photos, I just emailed to complain, everybody should.

That was some great photos and timeline. Could be that the owner was offered big $$$ and pulled it.

Mike, I am very lucky. Now that got power back, just have minor roof repair to do. I just got back from Home Depot with 1000 watt light and a bunch of roof stuff and will go to town up there. It is not a steep pitch either. It was too hot to work up there before anyway.

Then I will commute to work as normal tomorrow.

Have to put up a new fence but the old one was shot anyway. That will be a cool weather project, a section at a time.

Link no longer works.

Got another way of linking?

Thanks
