right now im using bandwidth off another router in the neighborhood until my dsl comes back up. im using the built in antenna in my inspiron and i get a weak signal. is there some kind of nic card i can gwt at frys with a GOOD antenna attached to it? or some kind of utility that can increase the signal?

Grab the antenna, stand on one leg, lift the other leg up and extend your hand... im positive you'll get a better signal 😀

Any kind of Orinoco card has superior range and signal strength.

Google orinoco and you can find that there are tons of manufacturers that use the orinoco line of chipsets. They are what the wifi hackers use because of their high quality.

Some orinoco cards have antenna ports. That might be what you're looking for.

Orinoco card + High gain antenna = winnar

They don't provide better signal than a built in laptop antenna unless you have an external antenna attached.

If money is no object, there are wireless LAN amplifiers - $200 to $300 a pop. Sample:WiFi

But, those are applied at the source - the Xmttr not the Rcvr, and maybe your neighbor would not like to be so public. 🙂

How far are you? Can you run a cable to his router temporarily?
