Increasing the screen resolution/color depth in Red Hat Linux 6.2

For a UNIX/Linux class I'm taking, I had to install Red Hat Linux 6.2 on my old Toshiba 220CDS laptop. I'm pretty new to Linux.

I'm running GNOME. The display looks terrible though, lots of jagged edges. I'm guessing I need to increase the color depth or resolution, but I don't have the foggiest idea how to do this.

Any tips?

run xf86config, or in RedHat you can run Xconfigurator.

Both should be run from a console.

There might be other problems you encounter - I just finished installing RedHat 6.2 on my NEC Versa 4050, and I had to create a custom "modeline" in my ../etc/X11/XF86config file to get the proper display sizing and color depth. Neither XF86config nor Xconfigurator would configure it properly.

Try doing a search at Google for "Toshiba 220CDS linux" and maybe someone has done this already and posted the modeline or any other helpful tips for installing linux on that machine.

Thanks for the tips,

I did a search and found a site that listed the modelines. I'm getting the hang of this...slowly. :D
