So I am sitting here ripping the 25cds of harry potter on my comp. When the rip first starts, using itunes, it is going at a stonge ~30x rip speed. Once it gets to about track 13-14 the really loud noise from the drive itself dissapears and then the rip speed drops down to 10x. Is there anyway to get the drive to stay at that 30x speed? thanks. I have a nec 5340 drive.

I have a much older drive that get a constant ~16-18x while ripping so I think it might be hardware, maybe firmware?

I would have helped, but you said it was for Harry Potter, so I can't now...

Just kidding. Have you tried using another program? iTunes is quirky as hell for me when it comes to mass ripping, and ripping at all actually.

Do you have Nero Ultra installed? You might be able to use their drive speed tool to force the drive to read at maximum speed. There are also a lot of hacked firmwares for the NEC drives that allow you to ncrease the ripping speed of the drive. I can't think of any good links off the top of my head, but I'm sure you could get some good ideas over at the CDFreaks.com forums.
