I had 2 hdd's setup in the 3 1/2 in bays in my full tower and decided to reposition the drives so that they'd be farther from each other. After doing so, there was a huge increase in the noise of both hdd's(ibm 60gb 60gxp and quantum 30gb LM). It was the spinning but the reading and writing was noticably louder. I have carpet in my house and am wondering if I charged my self up while moving the case and might have shocked both drives into doing this. The noise is very annoying and I don't know how to fix this. Can anyone help?

I meant to say it wasn't the spinning. The reading and writing operations are the ones that are loud.

well, moving the case wouldn't have shocked your drives because the charges you create are grounded by the metal parts in the case.

so if its not the static electricity, then could it be the drive mechanics that have malfunctioned? btw thanks for posting a reply, i was beginning to think nobody saw my post.

Put them back the way they were? Sounds like some kind of resonance effect going on. It's not damaged. Although as drives get older they do tend to become lounder, albeit not a sharp change.

good suggestion, i'll put them back the way they were when i get home. another thing, the ibm drive is 2 weeks old, and the quantum is about a year old, so I don't think its an age thing. but thanks.
