Inconsistent file modified dates

I just performed a clean install of Windows 7. I downloaded a few programs with Firefox 3.6 and saved some images as well.

I noticed in Windows Explorer that the last modified dates are very inconsistent. Some of them correctly show when the file was downloaded. Others have a date from months to years ago.

I'm assuming that the old date is from the remote server when the file was uploaded. It's very inconsistent. I saved some images from the same web page and some have today's date while others have a date in 2005. Is there a setting somewhere that determines this behavior?

Not inconsistent at all. It has been that way for a long time. (I remember it back in xp days). If you haven't physically changed something in the file, the time stamp will remain the same. You can disable time stamps all together however.

The old dates just indicate that there was no reason to update file x. It is the same as if you installed an old game, all the file modified dates will be the year the game was published (barring patches).

All the files I've saved in the past through my web browser had a modified date relative to the time I downloaded it. I don't know why it would change with Win7. I know some FTP clients let you choose whether or not to preserve the remote server modified date.

EDIT: I figured it out. The folder view for my Downloads folder had the column displayed as "Date" instead of "Date Modified" like all my other folders.
