So I have a somewhat older system -- about 6-7 years depending on the component. Recently, I started having trouble booting it. I have it on a "smart" power strip as the master device where powering on the master device will then provide power to the peripheral devices (speakers, monitor, etc.).
When it would fail to boot, I would hear the power strip switch on the peripherals, and a fan or two might make a partial rotation, but then stop and the strip switch would power off the peripherals again. No POST. The power and reset button LEDs on the mainboard would remain lit, but further attempts to power on would do nothing until switching off the power supply and letting the LEDs fade.
I've tried removing just about everything from the mainboard to see if there's a bad circuit I could find. GPU, sound card, hard drives, fans, memory, case switches... No noticeable changes. I tried using a different (non-smart) power strip with no changes. I tried hooking a different power supply (admittedly older, but still functioning the last time it was used) and saw the same behavior.
Any ideas of further things to try? At this point, I'm thinking it could be a dead/dying CPU or mainboard. My plan is to try replacing the CPU with a spare one I have lying around when I get the time. I appreciate any guidance on something I may have missed, though.
EDIT: As an addendum, when it would boot after this started, it would be stable until the next time it powered down.
