just a note that the per-capita data is crucial because the US population is about 65% higher than in 1968 when those graphs begin. regardless, they are sobering statistics. in 60 years we've (net) accomplished nothing, and actually become a bit worse.

Agree 100%. Per-capita is a much better overall view of gun trends.

Let me interrupt your data driven conversation with this little story from Kentucky.

Dude wanted to get a gun but he didn't want to go to one of the big box, expensive, brick and mortar stores we have around here. This FFL place, run out of some guys “farm” was where he went to get a good deal on a gun.

One hopes he won't have that license anymore... sounds like this kind of situation.

Eh, there's been progress here and there over the years. Desantis made it so you don't need a permit to conceal carry. Goes quite nicely with the "stand your ground" and "defend yourself if you feel threatened" laws that in turn go nicely with the abject fear seemingly gripping everyone that meth addicts are going to leap out of the shrubbery on them.

Oh, you mean gun control progress. Yeah, got nothin'.

If I have a fear, it's that everyone around me seems to be fucking armed. It's looney tunes.

I guess people there should start converting their houses into fortified bunkers.

I found this:
Govt really needs to develop some sort of mandatory twice a year mental health evaluation to identify early signs of brain deterioration.

I just finished watching this incredibly eerie video about Peter Keller, an avid video diary enthusiast and survivalist, who would regularly record video of his family life, holidays, and events such as his daughters graduation.
Disturbingly, he also documented his plan for "the end" in a videotape found by the authorities in his bunker. In the video, we see him building his bunker in Rattlesnake Ridge, Washington, which he had reportedly been building and prepping for since 2004. In the recordings, we hear his thoughts about life, the process of building the bunker, and his plans to murder his family.
The tape was found among a stockpile of ammunition and weapons, improvised explosive devices, and his bulletproof vest. He also had about 45 pounds of beans, "wine-making stuff," Vodka, propane, gasoline, food, soap, and other supplies in his bunker.
When his bunker was finally complete in April 2012, Keller murdered his wife Lynette, 41, and daughter Kaylene, 19, by shooting both women in the head with a silenced weapon. He then set fire to their home to cover the crimes, before fleeing to the underground bunker.
After a couple of weeks hiding out in his bunker, he was located by a SWAT team after they saw smoke from his heating system rising up through the trees. Following a 22 hour standoff, he killed himself, something he had vowed he would always do before getting caught.

Mark Miller reports on killer Keller's cellar bunker.

Guy sounds unnervingly like someone who'd be a regular poster on here.

I don't have that here but do figure that there are armed people in the neighborhood and in the streets. I mean, I know that most people I encounter are not armed. I figure a small percentage are. That's still way more than I'm comfortable with. I want to disarm everybody, including the cops.

Once you've gone partly Monty Python, why stop....go the full Monty.

I can only imagine what the next decades will bring. Just glad I work from home, gun nuts not being the main reason but they are a reason.
