Incompetent HP

My cousin has a computer from HP that he bought a year ago. The cooling goes like this:

stock Athlon64 3200 Heatsink with 70mm fan.
80mm fan in the back, pushing cool air inside to feed to the processor fan.

His case always ran really hot, and you know I figured there was a method to HP's madness. Today, I thought, wow this is rediculously hot, when I touched the side of the case. Let me change the direction of the back fan so that it pushes air out of case. After playing CS:S for about 10 minutes, I check the temperature in the BIOS and it read 58C. Then I put the fan back the way HP had it and played CS:S for another 10 minutes give or take, and the temperature in the BIOS read 61C. So it was hotter the way HP had it. Fools! I wonder why?

Well my friend's AXP2800+ HP comp had no case fans. I ended up installing a 92 mm exhaust for him. Even though he got this bit of cooling, he still has no video card cooling for his 9600 and it's passive.

It's hard to actually say whether or not HP has a bad chassis design or decision without knowing the system model number and the ambient as well.

VIAN, do you know what the model number is of it? I worked on the few A64 models, but never ran into the thermal problem.

The fan on that 3200 had better be a 70x15mm because that's what came of my sister's CPU.

Brain storm idea. You want VG exhaust at low cost? http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/ >92mm fans > Top of the page.
NMB 92x32 hub mounted thermistor=silent at 25C but at 55C=69cfm.
I bought 4 of these, they are high quality fans for $5. They are made for Dell's Intel HSs.

Drill new holes to mount it on the rear of the case or use a 80 to 92 adapter.

I bench tested one using a digital thermometer and a small electric space heater w/fan.
At 80F it starts ramping up but at 90F this bad boy takes off. Check it out.
