when do you think i should start doing my taxes?

previously i used to give my stuff to my parents who took it to a local person who did them for us for a small fee. now she no longer does that and i need to find someone else or do it myself. i'm thinking about doing it myself this year.

there are free program to do this right? or do i need to get some kind of tax software?
