Inaccurate power meter icon

I have a Gateway M505XL that has recently started giving me inaccurate (I think) battery power indication.

Right now it only charges to about 60-62%, and then the charge light goes off, which indicates to me that the battery is charging (it holds a charge, it's a LiOn), but that maybe WinXP Pro doesn't know it's fully charged. Some people have recommended "recalibrating" the battery, but my notebook doesn't have this option in the BIOS.

I've also switched to Always On and then fully recharged the battery, but it still only goes up to 60%. Any suggestions?

Try turning off all power management and running the battery down completely, then recharging it.

I'm trying that right now. I did once last night, and it didn't seem to help, but I'll do it one more time.

Specifically, I've switched to the Always On mode, disabled all Alarms and power saving options in the Control Panel, and I'm running CPUBurn while posting to messageboards 😉

Once it runs out, I'll plug in the AC and just let it charge for a few hours.

I also tried upgrading to the latest BIOS, and that didn't help (no new options for power saving or power management). Is there another power management option I'm missing somewhere?
