Inability to take photos in manual mode

Several times over the past couple of months I've set up my tripod at night, mounted my Canon T5i camera on it, adjusted all my settings but it will not let me take a photo. When I press the shutter, nothing happens and the ISO icon blinks. I went in there and changed the ISO setting from 100 to 4000 and everything inbetween and it made no difference. It will work in manual at dusk but when it's pitch black, nothing. Any thoughts?

Yeah, it probably is the lens being on autofocus and not letting you trip the shutter because it can't focus in the dark. You should hear the lens trying to focus if so.

If not, the camera is still has some sort of auto mode turned on and the blinking ISO light is it trying tell you there's not enough light. Increasing ISO, opening the aperture or slowing the shutter speed won't help because it's total darkness.

Dig into your camera menu to see if there is some setting preventing you from taking a photo when the camera doesn't think there is enough light.

EDIT: and google had this to say...

How do you take pictures in the dark with Canon?
Here are the camera settings:
  1. Put the exposure and focus on manual setting.
  2. Start with a 30 second exposure.
  3. Use the largest aperture you have. F2. 8 is nice. ...
  4. Crank your ISO up as high as it will go. Don't worry about the digital noise you might get at a high ISO setting.
