Inability to boot WinXP and access WinXP Protected Files

After a night of tinkering-gone-awry, I've lost ability to boot to WinXP Pro. The system stops after loading the file ntoskrnl.exe fro Windows\System32. I am unable to find a way to solve that problem, so I'm going to reinstall windows. I installed Win2K Pro to copy the files on the XP partition (NTFS) to another partition before I reformat it. However, there are some folders (Documents and Settings, mainly, which is being protected by WinXP. I am unable to access this folder from Win2K, or even from the pesudo-DOS WinXP recovery screen, where I have logged into the Admin account.

Any one have any ideas how to solve this problem? If you know of which file WinXP is unable to load while trying to start up (it lists them if you boot in Safe Mode) after ntoskrnl.exe and can tell me, please do.
