i used to use windows98se. recently i switched to windows xp professional. i use a dial up us robotics 56kbps modem. in windows 98 i used to start my computer and when i needed to connect to the ne i just turned my modem on and dial.

but in windows xp if i don't turn my modem on before booting it does not detect my modem. in device manager there is no modem to be found. but if i restart my machine with the modem on it detects my modem and there is no problem. so every time i forget to turn my modem on before starting windows and i have to restart. this is bothering me very much.
please help.

How is your modem connected to the computer? If it's a serial device Windows XP may not detect it if it's not turned on during boot and thus won't let you use it.

Windows98 didn't always try to detect serial devices before you used them. When it was time to access the device, THEN Windows98 would check for the device.
That may be why this works in Windows98 but not in XP.

You could try opening up the Device Manager and refreshing the view in Windows XP. This *might* detect the modem. Try it!

After turning on your modem, go to the Device Manager and hit Refresh.

That'll work. I've got the same modem as you do. FYI, this also happens in Win2000 as well. As a shortcut, go to the folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and look for the file devmgmt.msc. Create a shortcut to this file on your desktop or your quick launch toolbar. If you want the OS to detect the modem, click on this link and it'll tkae you to the Device Manager window. Click on your computer name and click on the Scan for hardware changes button (the right most button on the toolbar).

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to get over this "feature" {g}
