Everytime I boot up my computer, Microsoft Instant Messanger shows up on the right buttom corner, showing that it's running in the background. It annoys me and I tried getting rid of it the way I do in Windows ME.. but not working.. anyone know how to uninstall it or stop from starting up?

If you do it the msconfig way,

msmsgs

is for MSN Messenger

However, I would do it in Messenger itself
like I said above.

Just type the following under Start->Run:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

It'll remove that POS Messenger once and for all. It's the first thing I do on all XP installations. :D

Go into programfiles/ Messanger, and rename its exe to MSNOLD or something to that effect that will stop it and you wont get any errors either

go to sysoc.inf, copy it as sysoc2.inf so you can restore it later if you want. open the original, delete the
word "hide" for anything you want to remove (do not remove commas), save and reboot. Add/remove programs will now show
the items you "unhid".

If I remember correctly, removing Messenger can cause all kinds of problems. Such as Outlook starting really slowly. Feel free to correct me if I remember wrong.

All he wanted to do is keep it from starting up with Windows..

That is an option in the program itself !!

Some of you are making this a little harder than it needs to be.

The best way is either removing Messenger entirely by

Start->Run: [then enter the following]

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

OR

Just rename C:\Program Files\Messenger to something like Messenger2

You can still have Messenger on your system but it wont automaticallly startup with outlook.
Dont forget to update your shortcuts if you have any.

go here, download & install,
then look in the control panel for the "Startup" icon.
you can disable messenger auto start w/o mucking too much with your system.
on XP you may wish to switch the Control panel to "Classic View."

Also, you'll need to go into Outlook Express 6 (if you use it) and Tools...Options...uncheck "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger"...this will prevent it from running just while using Outlook.

I also uncheck allowing it to run in the background...that way, when I close it...it's really closed.
