In what sport is a coach the least important?

I'd say either soccer or hockey, probably hockey IMO. Baseball I guess may be as well.

Basketball coach is def. important, as well as football (since it requires many coaches). Vote for your opinion in the poll. I'm only adding a few sports, so please no "OMG YOU FORGOT CRICKET" or whatever.

In all sports some form of leadership is important. The coach sets the practices, the tempo of the training, and tries to inspire the athlete to want to do more.

Sometimes (like marathon running mentioned above) the coach is yourself. Even in this case the coach is still important.

In cricket the captain is in charge and makes all the decisions.

The coach is mainly there for training.

I think the baseball option should be divided up into coach American League, Coach National League. National league managers job is much harder without the DH.

People often say this, but the flip side is AL managers have tougher decisions to make with their starter. In the NL, a manager will usually pinch hit for his starter around the 6th or 7th inning if his spot in the lineup comes up.

While I agree that generally the NL is tougher, some ex-managers have remarked on the above.

Baseball? Does anyone know anything about sports? Baseball is like a chess game, how the manager manages the game has a ton to do with it. baseball is my least favorite sport, but still it requires the most strategy and management.

By the way, my vote was basketball. This should be evident by the way most teams churn through coaches like there's no tomorrow.

I used to think baseball, but Charlie Manuel made some moves this year that ended up with a World Series win. Conversely, Joe Maddon made some bad moves that cost his team.

I went with basketball, it seems like the sport most likely to have a group of individuals succeed. I still think a coach is important in basketball, but I had to pick one.

It has to be soccer.

Football/basketball = coaches draw up and call plays based on information on the field. Soccer as well, but not nearly as much based on how the games are played.
Hockey/baseball are still above soccer in terms of their (coaches) interaction and influence on the game. Lineup against the opponent makes baseball coaches almost as important as a football/basketball coach.

Soccer, it ends 0-0 in the pee-wees, it ends 0-0 in college, it ends 0-0 in the pros. If they can't ever figure out a strategy for getting the ball in the net at any level WTF are they there for?

And everyone that voted baseball should be kicked out of sports threads forever. There's probably no tougher coaching challenge in any sport anywhere than managing a pitching staff. Getting everyone the right balance of work is a tightrope act.

From the sports listed, I played Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball up to the High School/ODP level and my baseball coach was the least involved. We were terrible though so that may be why. Coach would pull me out of center to play second - I'm a lefty!

That must mean people like Popovich, Sloan, Hubie Brown, Larry Brown, Phil Jackson - yah, they all suck ass. Seriously, I mean look at how many teams the first 3 have been on! Oh wait ...

Sorry, but that's a stupid thing to say. Teams churn through coaches when they suck because they don't have someone who's properly managing playing time, timeouts, practices, lineups, etc. My vote would have to be soccer, but I don't know much about it.

You do realize that a soccer match consists of two teams right? While one team is trying to get it in the net, the other team is trying just as hard to keep it out. 0-0 is the same as 125-125 in basketball, just basketball requires a shorter attention span.
